Huffington Post and the Case of the Magic Mole

Michigan Daily Photo Editor Zachary Meisner thinks an Obama photo altered by the Huffington Post is worth ‘flipping’ out over.

The photo in question appeared on HuffPo.com and portrayed a ‘migrating’ mole on the wrong side of President Obama’s face. But Meisner confirmed that the president’s mole didn’t fly left for the winter by pitting the HuffPo’s pic against an AP original. In reality, the Post’s photo had simply been flipped.

By now you’re thinking, “So what?” But according to Meisner, “flipping photos is a cardinal sin in photojournalism” because it “changes the reality a photo is meant to capture.”

Meisner also notes that the use of Photoshop or other editing programs is a violation of AP photojournalism ethics. Check out Meisner’s post and the photo that fired him up HERE.

What do you think? Is Meisner making a mountain out of a mole? Is this an issue of ethics or aesthetics?
