Jeffrey Goldberg: The FishbowlDC Interview

goldberg.jpgSay hello to The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg. He is the author of “Prisoners: A Story of Friendship and Terror” and the proud owner of this month’s Atlantic cover story.

What word do you routinely misspell? occasion, all the time

What’s the name of your cell phone ring? I think it’s called Radiance, or Radiant, or Radiation, or something. But I keep meaning to change it the theme song from “Shaft.”

What time did you get up this morning? 5:30.

When did you last cry and why? In Portsmouth, New Hampshire, when a very nice lady asked me how I keep my shit together despite the pressures of campaigning.

How many emails do you receive a day, roughly? Actual emails, about 30 or 40. Crap, about 30 or 40.

What’s your favorite letter? The purloined one.

What single person played the biggest role / had the biggest influence on your journalism career? I can’t single out one. Seth Lipsky taught me a great deal, but so did Michael Hirschorn, Gerry Marzorati and David Remnick. And a bunch of others.

When’s the last time you volunteered? Where? Jewish tradition states that a high form of giving is anonymous giving, so let me not answer this one.

What did you have for breakfast? Woodstock Water Buffalo Yogurt. For real.

What one toiletry item could you not live without? You know the late Wilfred Thesiger, the great British explorer and writer? He used rocks for pillows. He’s a role model for me.

If you could have one superpower, which one would it be? The power to impose democracy on the Middle East. And X-Ray vision.

Red or white wine? Red.

Jenna or Barbara? Barbara Senior.

McSteamy or McDreamy? Don’t care.

Leno or Letterman? Letterman. Does anyone go for Leno?

Stewart or Colbert? Stewart, though it’s close.

Boxers or briefs? What did Gingrich say? That question is beneath my dignity.
