Madeleine Albright and Catherine Russell Join Tina Brown’s Women in the World Series

Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright joined Tina Brown‘s “Women in the World” series last night. This was the series’ first ever event in the District.

Asked how she would handle the situation in Ukraine if she were acting Secretary of State, Albright said, “Invading other countries illegally is not the way to try to be a part of the international system…I think what we don’t want to do is get in a zero sum game with them.”

In addition to a long history lesson on relations between the U.S., Russia, former Soviet Union, and Ukraine, Alyse Nelson, president and CEO of Vital Voices Global Partnership, moderated a conversation with Academy Award winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Pakistani activist Humaira Bachal.

“In Pakistan, you are finding people like Humaira who are risking their lives every day to bring change to their communities…They are doing it because they believe strongly that they want a better tomorrow for their generation,” said Obaid-Chinoy, referring to Bachal, who at the age of 13 began teaching her unenrolled girlfriends what she learned at school. Since then, a now 25 year old Bachal has founded the Dream Foundation, which to-date has provided education and support for more than 2,000 girls in Pakistan.

Prior to Brown’s closing conversation with Catherine Russell, U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues on her priorities in this role, CNN’s Senior Political Correspondent Brianna Keilar spoke with 2014 Mother of Invention recipient Lauren Shweder Biel, executive director of DC Greens.

Video of the evening is available via The Daily Beast’s coverage of the event. The series’ 5th annual summit “Women in the World: Stories and Solutions” is being held April 3 – 5 at New York’s Lincoln Center and will feature Diane Von Furstenberg, Meryl Streep, Barbara Bush, and Amb. Melanne Verveer.
