In an unusual HR twist, FishbowlDC has confirmed that Nicole Duran will join National Journal as Executive Editor of NJ Daily. Matt Cooper announced his interesting hire in an internal memo to the publication’s Congress team this week. Nothing short of meteoric, Duran’s leap to NJ management is raising eyebrows around the newsroom. Though she put in a number of years at Roll Call, CQ Daily and American Banker, she most recently served as a reporter for The Deal and has never worked as an editor.
In the memo, Cooper says he was “taken by Nicole’s ambition to break news, her exceptional energy and her spirit of generosity.” Perhaps sensing her generosity might not justify her position for the rest of his crew, Cooper closed the memo with a disclaimer:
“Please welcome her when she arrives or before then. And if you have questions or concerns you can let me or Ron know privately.”
Duran begins her new gig on September 6th. We hope she’s up for the challenge. Full memo after the jump.
I wanted to give you a heads up before I told the rest of the staff that we’ve hired Nicole Duran to be the Executive Editor of National Journal Daily. Nicole will help me manage and edit the Daily and assist in the 2.0 revamping of the publication. Ron and Patsy and I were very impressed by her and we think you’ll be, too.
Nicole knows Congress: Most recently a Senior Reporter at The Deal where she covered the intersection of business and politics, she’s a veteran of Roll Call (where she covered the House and Senate campaigns) and CQ Daily (where she covered the House floor). She’s also done a tour of duty at American Banker where she covered financial services legislation as it wended its way through Congress and at Deloitte where she helped produce SIGTARP reports on the financial crisis. She’s also written for Talkingpointsmemo. Before all of that, she worked her way up through local papers in Indiana and Michigan. (Yes, the latter delighted certain editors in chief.)
I was taken by Nicole’s ambition to break news, her exceptional energy and her spirit of generosity, as we like to call it. She’ll start on September 6, in time for what should be a tumultuous autumn on the Hill where we’ll want to be first, smart and indispensable.
Please welcome her when she arrives or before then. And if you have questions or concerns you can let me or Ron know privately. We’re both around today.
We’ll be making one more editor hire for the Daily, someone who’ll concentrate on editing and helping to give your great reporting the attention it deserves. If you have any candidates for that post, please let me know. Ed Andrews will continue to work half time for the magazine and half time for the Daily.
