NPC Spelling Bee Chooses Judges

As we’ve previously reported, on Sept. 18, the National Press Club is hosting a spelling bee that pits members of Congress against Washington reporters. Ticket sales are going well, but the event, which will donate funds to charity, still has seats to fill.

Since our last reporting, the powers that be have chosen two powerful female judges.

They are… Judge Paige Kimble, who runs The Scripps National Spelling Bee, America’s most famous spell-off, and Judge Heidi Hamilton, who chairs the linguistics department at Georgetown. Merriam-Webster will apparently provide the words for the bee, and the judges will determine whether each word has been spelled correctly as contestants cycle past the microphone.

They will also have a special, separate pronouncer (the person who says the words, definitions, etc.). That will be Peter Sokolowski, editor-at-large for Merriam Webster.

CBS’ Major Garrett and HuffPost‘s Howard Fineman, both fierce spellers who hopefully know how to spell potato, are among the contestants. Read more about it and purchase tickets here.
