Outrage Over ADC’s Celebration of Helen Thomas

Earlier this week we told you that Helen Thomas, the longtime White House correspondent who abruptly retired amidst controversy from comments she made about Israel, Jews and Palestine, was set to be honored by  the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC).  In announcing the award on November 2nd, a spokesperson for the ADC said, “Helen Thomas is a professional journalist who reported accurately, regardless of consequences, asked the tough questions, and applied principles of fairness — not based on politics, race or religion, but on the merits of a story.”

Not surprisingly, the announcement didn’t sit well with everyone.  One such person is Elan Steinberg, vice president of the American Gathering of Holocaust Survivors and their Descendants.  Steinberg contacted FishbowlDC to share his outrage at the ADC and White House press corps veteran:

“Honoring Helen Thomas, whose hateful words so pained Holocaust survivors, is a shameful act of indecency.  Her verbal outburst demanding we go back to the places where we and our families were gassed and burned was horrifying and shocking.  Its sheer bigotry was the antithesis of American values of tolerance and inclusiveness.  With so many deserving Arab Americans who could be honored, what could have motivated this organization to honor the likes of Helen Thomas.  Shame on them.”

The ADC’s gala dinner in honor of  Helen Thomas is set for November 18, 2010. It will be held here in Washington at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel and tickets are starting at $150.00 a pop.
