Brunei Penal Codes Cause Orgs to Cancel Plans with Beverly Hills Hotel

2010-08-25 THR SketchThe Hollywood Reporter announced that it would end a 20 year tradition of hosting its annual Women in Entertainment breakfast at the Beverly Hills Hotel yesterday. The hotel is owned by an investment agency through the Sultan of Brunei, who instituted “a severe new penal code based on Sharia law that calls for death by stoning for homosexuals and adulterers.”

“The recent despicable decisions by the Sultan of Brunei make it impossible for us to consider moving forward in any way with any hotel that is part of the Dorchester Collection,” said Janice Min, co-president and chief creative officer of Guggenheim Media’s Entertainment Group, which publishes The Hollywood Reporter.

Other events organizers that have severed ties with the hotel include the Motion Picture & Television Fund, Feminist Majority Foundation, Independent School Alliance for Minority Awards, and The Outgiving Conference.

In the US, the Dorchester Collection has locations in Beverly Hills and Los Angeles.

Update 4:33 PM:

The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) just announced they too are joining the boycott against the Beverly Hills Hotel and is pulling  its Courage in Journalism Awards ceremony from the venue.

“We, the IWMF, can no longer hold an event at a venue whose owner stands for the violation of the very human rights we fight for,” said Elisa Lees Muñoz, Executive Director of the the IWMF. “As a consequence to the introduction ofSharia law in Brunei, we have decided to cancel our contract with the Beverly Hills Hotel and move this year’s Courage Awards to another location.”
