We can only begin to count the number of things wrong with this piece of news: adding to the oh, four gazillion new magazines launching in D.C. this year, a new regional shopping magazine ShopDC will premiere later this month.
It’s founded by U of MD MBA student Zoey Rawlins, who got $7,000 in seed money from the school’s entrepreneurship center. Rawlins doesn’t see herself competing with D.C. Style, Capitol File, Modern Luxury’s DC, or any of the other of encyclopedia-sized deluxe mags.
“I don’t see us competing with them directly,” Rawlins told the Washington Business Journal (who lost a staffer to Jason Binn upstart Capitol File). “We will be competing for the same advertising pool. When you look at a lifestyle magazine, you’re looking at who’s who in D.C. ShopDC is for people who are interested in shopping in town.”
Newsflash: If you’re competing for advertising dollars, you’re competing with the others directly.
