CBS News’s D.C. Bureau Stars

CBS News reeled in seven Emmy awards last night. Some journalists in CBS News’s Washington bureau are to be commended for winning an Emmy for “OUTSTANDING INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM IN A REGULARLY SCHEDULED NEWSCAST.”

The Emmy was awarded for Rape in America: Justice Denied which appeared on the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric. D.C.-based Laura Strickler, an investigative producer, worked on that story.

Another Emmy was awarded for BEST STORY IN A REGULARLY SCHEDULED NEWSCAST. The story was The Battle of Wanat. Those in the D.C. Bureau who worked on this story include National Security Correspondent David Martin, Senior Producer Ward Sloane and Producer Mary Walsh.

Washington TV Newsers Dominate Airtime

andrea-mitchell1.jpg News consultant Andrew Tyndall added up the airtime of the nation’s top network news correspondents (anchors excluded) over the last decade. NBC’s Andrea Mitchell topped the list with 2,416 minutes of airtime. NBC’s David Gregory, CBS’ David Martin and NBC’s Pete Williams all placed in the top five. DC boasts 7 of the top 10 and 12 of the top 20 most heavily-used newsers of the decade.

Crawford Makes CBS Debut on Today’s “Face the Nation”

CBS’ Bob Schieffer revived a Walter Cronkite tradition on this morning’s “Face the Nation”– the holiday roundtable. The CBS News team- chief White House correspondent Chip Reid, national security Bob Orr, national security correspondent David Martin and congressional correspondent Nancy Cordes- joined the anchor and chief Washington correspondent for 2010 analysis and predictions. And that wasn’t all… today’s “Face the Nation” was also the CBS debut of chief legal correspondent Jan Crawford. She recently made the move from ABC and kicks off a new year in CBS’ Washington bureau.

President Obama will address the nation from West Point at 8pmET on his Afghanistan plans. TVNewser reported yesterday that all networks will carry Obama’s primetime address. As far as we know so far, here’s how the nets and cablers will cover…

CBS: Katie Couric will anchor CBS’ live broadcast at 8pmET with White House correspondent Chip Reid at West Point and Bob Schieffer, Lara Logan and David Martin in DC.

ABC: Charlie Gibson will anchor ABC’s live coverage. He will be joined by George Stephanopoulos, Jake Tapper, Martha Raddatz, senior foreign correspondent Jim Sciutto in Kabul and ABC News consultant Ret. General Jack Keane. Terry Moran will anchor “Nightline” from West Point beginning at 11:35pmET. Also at 8pmET, political director David Chalian and senior political reporter Rick Klein will anchor ABC News NOW’s live coverage on abcnews.com. Aaron Katersky, Ann Compton and Steve Roberts will cover it on radio.

CNN: Wolf Blitzer, Campbell Brown and Anderson Cooper will anchor CNN’s live coverage beginning at 8pmET from NY. John King, Christiane Amanpour, Fareed Zakaria, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Candy Crowley, Michael Ware, Pentagon correspondents Chris Lawrence and Barbara Starr, foreign affairs correspondent Jill Dougherty, and Ed Henry from the West Point, as well as senior political analysts Gloria Borger and David Gergen will contribute.

Just after CBS’ Lara Logan appeared on “Charlie Rose” to discuss Afghanistan and war coverage this week, Rose hosted NBC’s Richard Engel and Max Cleland, former Senator and head of the Veterans Administration, and Vietnam veteran. That show re-airs tonight at 8pm.

Logan and other CBS-ers David Martin, Byron Pitts, Scott Pelley and their producers shared stories of their experiences reporting in Afghanistan on last night’s “Evening News.” There was also a voiceover from Cami McCormick, who was injured in Afghanistan this summer. Watch here.

Don Imus is back on TV- on Fox Business Network.

The CBS “Evening News” will start a series tonight called “Afghanistan: The Road Ahead,” with reports from Lara Logan, David Martin and interviews with Senators John McCain and John Kerry conducted by anchor Katie Couric.

WaPo has partnered with CBS for a three-part series on the battle of Wanat in Afghanistan, beginning yesterday.

MSNBC will also have special coverage of Afghanistan this week, airing next Sunday. Richard Engel will report “Tip of the Spear,” to coincide with the 8th anniversary of the war.
