Waters Turning RealClear

Relax y’all! We know you were freaking out about our previous post regarding Governing magazine, wherein we told  you about the hiring of a new publisher, Mark Funkhouser.

“Governing magazine has hired Dr. Mark Funkhouser, the former mayor of Kansas City, Missouri, as publisher. He replaces outgoing publisher Erin Waters, who resigned in February,” we said then.

“But what about Erin Waters?!?!?!?” was undoubtedly your reaction. “Where is she going????”

Well now we know the answer: RealClearPolitics. They announced today that Waters has started at the company in the newly-created position of Director of Product and Business Development in Washington, DC.

“We’re excited to add Erin’s name to the list of top-notch professionals who’ve joined RealClearPolitics recently,” said Tom Bevan, co-founder and Executive Editor of RealClearPolitics. “As we grow our coverage in DC and expand into new verticals, Erin will play a key role in these products and business development.”

We’re sure there’s a better Real Clear + Waters joke in here somewhere, but we can’t put one together right now. Feel free to do so in the comments.

Musical Publishers at Governing Mag

More top of the masthead shuffling at Governing. Associate Publisher for Finance Erica Pyatt has left, according to sources at the mag. She is heading over to McMurry/TMG as part of their biz dev team. This comes two weeks after top Publisher Erin Waters left for RealClearPolitics, and just days after the hiring of her replacement, former Kansas City Mayor Mark Funkhouser. Pyatt’s duties are being folded under Mary Noel, Associate Publisher for Technology.

Former Mayor Becomes Governing Publisher

Governing magazine has hired Dr. Mark Funkhouser, the former mayor of Kansas City, Missouri, as publisher. He replaces outgoing publisher Erin Waters, who resigned in February.

Funkhouser was elected mayor in 2006 and served till 2011. Since then , he has been the director of the Governing Institute, an initiative affiliated with Governing magazine that “works with state and local leaders to improve performance and outcomes through research, support and education.”

“America’s states, cities and counties are at a pivotal moment right now,” said Funkhouser in a statement Friday. “As political stagnation has continued in Washington, states and localities are taking on new roles and new responsibilities, with fewer and fewer resources at hand. Over the past 27 years, Governing has established itself as the best resource for America’s government leaders. I’m eager to build on that legacy and help make Governing an even more vital partner for state and local public servants.”

GOVERNING Gets a New Publisher

Guess who has a new publisher? It’s GOVERNING Magazine. Her name is Erin Waters.

In a release posted on their website today, it says “Waters will oversee business development and sales across market segments such as public finance, infrastructure, energy and advocacy.” Over the last two years, she has been focused on “business development and expansion across the GOVERNING platform, and is credited with the launch of GOVERNING U, a resource for prospective public policy students.”

In other boring news about this…Prior to joining GOVERNING, Waters worked for CQ, where she first managed the digital media platform and later handled advocacy advertising sales across different properties. Fred Kuhn becomes the Associate Publisher for Information Technology, where he manages a 16-member sales team across e.Republic, GOVERNING’s parent company. “Kuhn will focus his deep experience and expertise in this segment to maximum expansion for the company.”

Congratulations to Waters!
