The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly: White House Correspondents’ 2014

Capitol File party

Capitol File party

It’s now been 24 hours since I’ve done anything White House Correspondents related, and I’m still exhausted. Fifteen parties over the course of three days! This must be what it’s like to climb Mount Everest or win an Iron Man competition…

Sort of.

While we didn’t make it to all the various WHCD2k14 shindigs, we made it to most. Our personal highlight of the weekend? Definitely when “Modern Family’s” Sofia Vergara did a complete about-face when asked if she would take a picture of us with her hot boyfriend. Runner up – “Glee’s” Matthew Morrison’s “sex eyes.”

Check out our party-by-party run down, after the jump…

Story Partners Hires Four

Story Partners, the public affairs firm founded by Gloria Dittus early last year, recently added four new team members to its Washington, D.C. office. Anne Brady joins as Vice President; Mollie O’Dell as Director; Mary Elizabeth Margolis as an Associate; and Steven Place as an Executive Assistant.

Prior to her gig at Story Partners, Anne Brady was the vice president of government relations at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB).  She is the former Deputy Chief of Staff for Congressman Mark Schauer and served under then Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Congressman Rahm Emanuel at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC).   Mollie O’Dell, former Deputy Press Secretary for the U.S. Department of Transportation, joins Story Partners from North Bridge Communications.  Mary Elizabeth Margolis is a former employee of Runyan Public Affairs and Steven  Place is a recent graduate of Catholic University.

A Wired Election Night with Story Partners

Be careful what you tweet tomorrow night because roughly 200 of your friends and colleagues will read every word of it from the home of Gloria Dittus.  The serial entrepreneur and longtime PR maven is hosting a “Wired Election Party” for her latest public affairs venture, Story Partners.

Guests at the ”Story Partners’ Wired Election Party” will be able to watch election returns on all the major cable networks (with different channels on each floor of Gloria’s Kalorama manse) while screens of a new microsite, created by Story Partners and NJI Media, will stream Twitter feeds from campaign reporters, pundits and even the candidates themselves.

“I’m a nerd and a political science major so election night is my Super Bowl,” said Story Partners Principal Amos Snead while explaining his excitement over tomorrow night’s fete.

Participants at the event will be able to join the conversation by tagging their Twitter posts with #WEP2010 and folks from home can get in the mix by checking out the microsite that is already live at www.WiredElection.com.

Public affairs maven Gloria Dittus is back for another round of entrepreneurial ventures. Dittus, a founder of both Direct Impact and Dittus Communications will soon find out if the third time really is a charm, announcing today that she has launched Story Partners.

“We strive not to be the biggest public affairs firm, but simply the best,” said Dittus.

Billed as a “game changing public affairs firm,” Story Partners has set up headquarters in Washington D.C. with offices in New Orleans and Birmingham. The firm’s founding team consists of several former Dittus (now FD) folks like FishbowlDC fave Amos Snead, Shelton Jones, Deborah Sauri, and Collier Craft.

SP’s roster also includes Rick Heartsill, Norma Jane Sabiston, CNN alum Jill Neff Watson, Stephanie Fontenot and Kate Cazayoux.

“First Lady of the Press” Unplugged

A group of about twenty women in DC media gathered at Teatro Goldoni last week to honor one who paved the way- Helen Thomas.

Hosts Janet Donovan and Christine Warnke started a game that proved to be a fascinating lesson in history and journalism. Each around the table- which included WaPo’s Mary Ann Akers and Amy Argetsinger, CSPAN’s Greta Wodele, Gloria Dittus, Jan Smith Donaldson and Chicago Sun-Times’ Lynn Sweet- asked Thomas one question, on the record.

Ever wondered which President Thomas would have most wanted to sleep with? TWT’s Stephanie Green went there, and asked. “None,” Thomas was quick to reply- though she did share an anecdotal story about a walk home shared with President John F. Kennedy.

Her favorite active journalist? ABC’s Sam Donaldson, though she insists it’s not just because she was seated next to his wife (as Jan pumps arms in air). And least favorite? “Maybe a few people on Fox. They don’t like me either,” she says.

She commented that people often ask her what it was like to be a woman reporter- “Well I’ve never been anything else,” adding “nobody ever told me when I grew up in Detroit and went to public schools that it was a man’s world.”

And her advice for young journos? “You’re only as good as your last story.”
