Jefferson Book Party Toasts Arianna Huffington and Thrive

20140515_190857Last night at The Jefferson, Constance Milstein, Gail MacKinnon and Rachel Pearson hosted Arianna Huffington in celebration of her new book, Thrive: The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Life of Well-Being, Wisdom, and Wonder.

Huffington wrote Thrive after a fall brought on by exhaustion and a lack of sleep sent her to the hospital.

“The motivation for writing the book was my own burnout, and then looking around and seeing how many millions are burned out. And then, asking the questions that we stop asking after college, ‘What is the good life? What is success?’ And if you think about it, we define success, in search of these two metrics of money and power, and in this town, especially power. And this is like trying to sit on a two legged stool. Sooner or later you fall off. Nothing wrong with these two metrics. It’s just that you need the third leg of the stool.” Read more

BREAKING: FNC’s Greta Van Susteren and hubby John Coale Land Lindsay Lohan for White House Correspondents’ Dinner

Fox News’s Greta Van Susteren and her husband, John Coale, have something of a tradition landing unusual, blockbuster guests for the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. One year it was Ozzy Osbourne, the next it was Kim Kardashian and last year it was former V.P. hopeful and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

This year they seem to have outdone themselves. They’re bringing Trouble, otherwise known as actress Lindsay Lohan, to the dinner as well as to socialite Tammy Haddad‘s and Hilary Rosen‘s infamous garden brunch on Saturday afternoon.

The notorious party girl will have her pick of festivities this weekend. For the media’s sake, we sure hope they keep Lohan on a loose leash!

Clarification: Palin’s office wrote in to complain that she actually did not attend the WHCD last year. She was in Washington to keynote a speech for a pro-life group and popped into some parties with Van Susteren and Coale. Duly noted.

WaPo’s Festering Attribution Problem

WaPo‘s The Reliable Source blog continues in its long quest for lateness and attribution issues. And boy are they winning.

On Friday at 1:57 p.m. they reported the “news” that FNC’s Greta Van Susteren and hubby John Coale were attending the Kardashian wedding this past weekend. This was nearly four hours after Politico CLICK published an item that didn’t source a Thursday FishbowlDC item which first broke the news. To their credit, but not much because they wouldn’t have done it on their own, Politico later added proper attribution. But not without reasoning they had “independently sourced” the item. That’s right, independently sourced it (in the mazes of their minds) and then didn’t publish until the following day.

But they’re not alone. WaPo‘s Names and Faces has contracted Lateness Fever from The Reliable Source. They also have an attribution problem. Today they paraded readers through a typical Style section rehashing of the weekend Kardashian wedding. Blah blah and nearly nothing new there. Folded into that was the “news” that Van Susteren and Coale attended the wedding, which, if you don’t know this by now you should probably just show up to Coale’s house for dinner and let him tell you about it. This was news last Thursday. Now? It’s stale with mold. They even have news of a “private” email exchange with Coale in order to avoid proper sourcing.  WaPo‘s one bit of new news today in that item: The highlight of Coale’s evening was dancing with Vera Wang.

FNC’s Greta and Hubby Skip CNN Party

main_peru.jpg

FNC’s Greta Van Susteren‘s husband John Coale made a special point on Friday of telling FishbowlDC that his wife was also a “big name” who’d be attending CNN’s 30 anniversary party at the National Press Club this past weekend.

But as it turned out, the couple couldn’t attend. On Saturday (the same night as the CNN soiree) Van Susteren took her “big name” to Peru to go “one-on-one with the family of Stephany Flores, the 21-year-old who Joran van der Sloot is accused of brutally murdering,” read the news on her Gretawire blog. The interview airs Monday on her 10 p.m. show.

Mike Allen’s “Surprise” Birthday Party, Brought To You By Starbucks

Most of DC wakes up to him, even more of DC wonders if and when he ever sleeps, Politico’s Mike Allen never seems to stop.

So last night, co-hosts John Harris and Ann O’Hanlon, Jim and Autumn VandeHei, Mike Feldman, Betsy Fischer, Hilary Rosen, Jonathan Karl, Greta Van Susteren and John Coale thought it was about time for Mikey to let loose with a “surprise” birthday party at the home of one of DC’s best hosts Tammy Haddad.

And how do you go about surprising someone who knows everything going on in this town? Tammy and co. posed the party as a celebration of “President Obama’s 160 Days of Media.” The surprise was spoiled just a little before the party- Tammy had to fill Mike in to ensure his attendance.

Ben Bradlee and Sally Quinn, Ann Compton, John Dickerson, Rita Braver and Bob Barnett, Suzanne Malveaux, Nia-Malika Henderson, Savannah Guthrie, Judy Woodruff and Al Hunt, Debbie Dingell, Sam Feist, Steve Chaggaris, Querry Robinson, Roger Simon, Ann Schroeder Mullins, Lauren Vicary, Mark Murray, Sasha Johnson, Juleanna Glover, Janet Donovan, Edie Emery, Adam Verdugo, Carol Lee, Alex Burns, Michael Feldman, Ron Bonjean, Lynn Sweet, Bill Burton and Laura Capps, Gordon Johndroe and Austan Goolsbee, among many others, all donned “I Like Mike” campaign-ish buttons.

Harris and VandeHei each toasted their all-star, each saying that Mike had a bigger heart than any guy they’ve ever met.

Mike also gave a really gracious speech, joking that the party was sponsored by Starbucks and thanking Tammy and others for their friendship and hospitality, and God, quipping VandeHei thinks that’s a reference to him. VandeHei called him a “guy who will break more news before I’m done with this toast than I will in my career” and very appropriately, the “guy who gets up in the morning and reads all the papers so the rest of us don’t have to.”

Always the intrepid reporter, Mike even included a pool report in this morning’s Playbook:

POOL REPORT from Washington’s true bipartisan DMZ — TAMMY HADDAD’s YARD. Tammy (the one carrying two cameras, as well as throwing the party) had a few friends over to “Celebrate! President Obama’s 160 DAYS OF MEDIA, Hosted By John Harris and Ann O’Hanlon, Jim and Autumn VandeHei, Mike Feldman, Betsy Fischer, Jonathan Karl, Greta Van Susteren and John Coale, Hilary Rosen, Jonathan Martin, and Tammy Haddad.” Aided and abetted by the magic of Kim Kingsley. (hat tip: Mom)

THE CARTOON SPHYNX SAYS: Thank you for the love and amazing time, and for taking the time to appreciate and enjoy each other.

IT TURNS OUT THAT… even Michael Feldman would want to come back as Michael Feldman.

Mike’s birthday card.

More party photos after the jump. Also, find out where Mike’s friends read his Playbook, courtesy of Politico‘s Patrick Gavin. We have to agree with Margaret Carlson- “Doesn’t everybody read it in bed?”
