WaPo’s Wesley Lowery Responds to Joe Scarborough’s Criticism on CNN

MSNBCNNFergusonThis morning on CNN, Washington Post reporter Wesley Lowery, who was arrested, assaulted and released without charges, paperwork or the names of the arresting officers last night in Ferguson, Mo. with HuffPost’s Ryan Reilly, addressed comments made by Joe Scarborough today on “Morning Joe.”

Scarborough said, “I’ve been in places where police officers said, ‘All right. You know what? This is cordoned off. You guys need to move along.’ You know what I do? I go, ‘Yes, sir,’ or ‘Yes, ma’am.’ I don’t sit there and have a debate and film the police officer unless I want to get on TV and have people talk about me the next day.”

Lowery began by encouraging Scarborough to “get out of 30 Rock where he’s sitting there sipping his Starbucks smugly” and “do some reporting on the ground.”

Rep. Cohen to CNN: ‘I Still Think of Her as My Daughter’

This morning CNN aired an interview between congressional correspondent Dana Bash and Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.). Cohen is the congressman who began tweeting to a blonde coed back in February, raising eyebrows as to just who Victoria Brink was. At the time, many wondered if she was his girlfriend. Cohen ultimately said she was her daughter and introduced her at Washington parties as such.

New revelations last week, including a DNA test, however, proved otherwise.

“She said she didn’t know who her biological father was, she said for her mental health she needed it,” Cohen told CNN of the DNA test. “I would have avoided it but I’d do anything for Victoria.”

Cohen said he still feels like he’s her father. “We still communicate and I care about her greatly and I think she cares about me and I hope, we plan to continue to have a relations,” he told Bash. “I still think of her as my daughter.”

The story aired on “New Day,” hosted by Chris Cuomo and Kate Bolduan, both of whom quickly jumped in to defend Cohen. Read more

Zucker’s Bold Morning Show Announcement: Chris Cuomo and Kate Bolduan

CNN President Jeff Zucker sent a quick note to staff this morning, filling them in on news of the new upcoming morning program that will replace Soledad O’Brien‘s “Starting Point.”

He wrote: “I wanted to be the first to share with you all a very exciting announcement we are about to make about our new morning show.  We welcomed Chris Cuomo to the CNN family last month, and we are now rounding out the team with our own Kate Bolduan, and welcoming Michaela Pereira from KTLA in Los Angeles.  There will be much more news about this exciting new show in the weeks to come, but today’s announcement gives us a very strong start.  Please join me in congratulating Chris and Kate, and welcoming Michaela to CNN.”

Per a press release, CNN announced today that Chris Cuomo and Kate Bolduan will co-host the network’s new morning show, which will premiere this spring. Michaela Pereira will join CNN from KTLA Morning News in Los Angeles, as the program’s news anchor. News executive Jim Murphy will oversee the program as senior executive producer, and Matt Frucci will serve as executive producer. The show will be broadcast from CNN’s New York City studios.

“I’ve been looking forward to this announcement since I first joined CNN,” said Zucker.

Whitaker with wife Alexis Gelber

Looking for a way to pass the time while you wait out this weekend’s wintry weather?  If so, you’re in luck because Mark Whitaker‘s “My Long Trip Home” just  hit bookshelves.  Earlier this week, the EVP and  managing editor of CNN Worldwide returned to Washington to celebrate the release of his family memoir at an intimate affair hosted in the Georgetown residence of Mandy Grunwald.

No shortage of star power, the event boasted big name guests like  Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA), CBS News Bureau Chief Chris Isham, NBC’s Andrea Mitchell and hubby Alan Greenspan, NYT’s Mark Leibovich, NBC’s Luke Russert, Alexis Gelber, Ben Bradlee and Sally Quinn, Huff Post’s Howard Fineman, CNN’s Jessica Yellin, Dana Bash, Wolf Blitzer, and Kate Bolduan.

CNN Names Bolduan New Capitol Hill Correspondent

As we hinted at weeks ago, Kate Bolduan will join CNN’s Capitol Hill unit. David Bohrman, senior vice president of programming and Washington bureau chief, announced the news today.

Bolduan will begin her new assignment Monday, April 25. She was previously a general assignment correspondent for the network.

Psst. We Hear That…

CNN is likely to choose Kate Bolduan to be the new congressional correspondent. At the moment she’s a general assignment reporter for CNN. There’s a vacancy since Brianna Keilar moved to the White House team earlier this month. Most CNNers in the bureau expect that Bolduan will be the pick.

Whose Shoes: Revealed

The tiger print ballet flats on today’s contestant of our virtual game show “Whose Shoes?” belong to HuffPost Editor-in-Chief Arianna Huffington. She wore them to HuffPost‘s recent rooftop party atop its D.C. offices in honor of the publication’s evening e-mail newsletter, HuffPost Hill.

Guesses included CNN’s Candy Crowley, TV’s “Roseanne” actor Stephen Dorff (find out who Dorff is here), and D.C. reporter Kate Bolduan, a general assignment reporter for CNN.

Others correctly guessed Huffington.

Taking Out The Trash: WHCD Edition

What we almost missed today…

• CNN reports Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) will not actually be attending the WHCD tomorrow as a guest of Fox News.

• C-SPAN isn’t the only place you can catch the WHCD dinner. CNN and MSNBC will both be airing it. And according to a release, CNN’s Kate Bolduan will be live from the red carpet “to capture the arrivals of the Washington and Hollywood elite.”

Sam Haskell celebrated “Promises I Made My Mother” with a book party last night (to kick off WHCD weekend?). We hear those in attendance included Miss DC Kate Marie Grinold, Tammy Haddad (complete with TamCam), NBC’s Betsy Fischer, Bloomberg’s Margaret Carlson and Kate Michael.
