Ask People Whatever the Hell You Want?

Here’s a fun twist. On August 9, WaPo‘s Clinton Yates, NPR’s Linda Holmes and Slate‘s Dave Weigel will appear at Politics & Prose for an evening of — what do we call this — verbal waterboarding? No, no, it’s called “Ask Roulette” and it’s an evening of “strangers asking each other any questions they want.”

What could possibly go wrong?

The announcement says if you get called on stage you’ll be able to ask your question, but only after you answer a question. Watching is also perfectly acceptable. Over the course of the evening, they promise “unexpected connections, surprising anecdotes, and honest conversation—and laughter.”

The fun begins at 7 p.m.

The American Women in Radio & Television has announced their 35th annual Gracie Awards.

NBC cleaned up – even with its prison lock-up show.

“NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams”:Outstanding Hard News Feature on “Unlikely Refugees.”
MTP: “Outstanding Interview Program or Feature”
Andrea Mitchell: “Outstanding Reporter/Correspondent” award.
Melissa Lee: “Individual Achievement” as an “Outstanding Host.”
MSNBC’s “Lockup”: Outstanding Series

National award winners will be presented at a black-tie gala at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, CA on May 25.The event benefits the Foundation of American Women in Radio & Television, a charitable non-profit.

It’s hard to forget that NBC segment (as shown above) from the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis/St. Paul when Mitchell gracefully pulled off an interview while she nearly got swallowed up by the balloons.

> Update: NPR reeled in three Gracie Awards. They include the documentary series “The Science of Spirituality” from religion correspondent Barbara Bradley Hagerty; a two-part report from Kabul correspondent Soraya Sarhaddi Nelson on wide-spread drug addiction in Afghanistan; and the Culturetopia podcast, hosted by arts reporter Neda Ulaby and blogger Linda Holmes.

Trading NSYNC for NPR

He brought “sexy back,” but can he do anything to save journalism?

Pop star Justin Timberlake was recently spotted sporting an NPR tee-shirt. While NPR-ers are flattered, they seem equally confused, blogging Ten Speculative Reasons Justin Timberlake Might Be Wearing This NPR T-Shirt.

Obviously, he’s just borrowing the tee from Timbaland.

NPR’s Linda Holmes‘ Top 10 is after the jump.

What’s In A NPR Name?

Linda Holmes on NPR’s MonkeySee blog writes:

In a roundabout way (by which I mean via Peter Sagal‘s Twitter feed), I discovered this entirely user-created and absolutely unofficial time-killer in which you discover “Your NPR name.”

The rules: Take the first letter of your middle name and insert it anywhere you’d like in your first name. And then your last name is the smallest foreign town you’ve ever visited. Presto: You too can compete with Korva Coleman, Lakshmi Singh and Mandalit del Barco.

My NPR name? Alinda Castelldefels, which you must admit is awesome. I am absolutely using that next time they let me on the radio.
