John Harris Tries to Waterboard Us Again

John Harris, co-founder of Politico went on CNN’s Reliable Sources with Howard Kurtz this weekend to talk about the coming election season. Although it was a roundtable with Matt Lewis from The Daily Caller and Margaret Carlson from Bloomberg, Kurtz dismissed them and settled in for a one-on-one with Harris about (SHOCKER, please sit down for this one…) Politico’s new E-Book, The Right Fights Back. Guess they realized the constant barrage of book promotion to it’s readers on “Playbook” had reached it’s saturation point and they needed to waterboard a new audience.

Harris takes a moment to talk about “classic new media reporter,” Mike Allen during the interview. On his relationship with Allen, Harris went on a seriously mushy mission and says, “I’ve always had a degree of frustration that he knows so much. There’s so much information rattling around his head and in his notebook.” Wow, John… This Mike Allen sounds like a real dreamboat! Tell me more! Now this is awkward… Kurtz next asks if Harris is disappointed that the E-Book didn’t make more news and “generate more headlines.” Harris says that Allen “did a lot of publicity in the first week and we’re quite pleased with that.” So the strategy worked? Well, not exactly. Harris admits that when it’s all said and done, they “might make a little money on this.” So, there you have it. Even after constant promotion, direct emails to its readers and non-stop mentions, they’ll make “a little money.”  Is all that worth pissing off the people that read your work?

Harris is banking on the fact that we won’t mind drowning in future E-Books. In fact, he says they’re planning “3 or 4 more” before the election.

How Much Klout Do You Have?

Beltway journalists’ obsession with Twitter has made “Klout me” the new “Google me.” We sometimes like to think of ourselves as ahead of the curve.

For those unfamiliar with Klout, it’s an online tool that measures how important you are in the Twittersphere on a scale of 1 to 100. Your level of importance (“Klout”) is determined by how many people are responding to and sharing your tweets. The more engaged people are with your content, the higher your score. Klout also shows what topics you’re most invested in, who you influence (meaning, who’s reacting to and sharing the messages you tweet) and who’s influencing you.

In voyeuristic fashion, we went ahead and checked the Klout on a sampling of Washington journos.

Dylan Byers: The new media reporter at Politico working with Ben Smith on his revamped blog. His Klout score is 57. The topics he deals in most on Twitter are pretty straightforward. They include: New York City, advertising, and family (aww). He influences Adweek‘s David Levine and Politico‘s Eliza Krigman. On the flip side, Think Progress and NYT‘s Brian Stelter shape his Twitter world.

Nia-Malika Henderson: National political reporter for WaPo. Some of her favorite Twitter topics are moms, Henderson, and Barack Obama. Who she influences most: MSNBC Al Sharpton‘s “Politics Nation” and “The Bill Press Show.” Those who influence Henderson are entirely exclusive to WaPo reporters, except CNN’s Sam Feist.

NJ‘s Major Garrett: Congressional Correspondent for NJ and, according to Klout, a New England Patriot’s fan. That’s the second thing he’s most engaged in on Twitter. Others are major league baseball and conservative politics. Garrett influences Wofford College and NJ‘s Chris Frates. He’s influenced by Slate‘s Dave Weigel and The Atlantic‘s Molly Ball. His Klout: 56. UPDATE: Major questions Klout’s validity. He writes in, “I AM NOT A NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS FAN…..I have never tweeted anything about the Patriots. I am a San Diego Chargers fan and San Diego Padres fan and fan of my alma mater, the University of Missouri and have tweeted frequently about them, but never, ever, ever the Patriots. Klout is seriously missing a klue.”

Current TV’s David Shuster: Former MSNBC anchor, current Current TV contributor/Keith Olbermann sub. He’s got a Klout score of 48 and an incredibly random group of topics he tweets about. Included are libraries, mother nature and religion and spirituality. Oh, and tea. Strange bedfellows: He influences WaPo‘s Ezra Klein but is shaped by Olbermann and FNC’s Bret Baier.

WaPo‘s Jonathan Capehart: Editorial writer at WaPo and high flying with a Klout score of 60. Some things he likes to tweet about: Rick Perry, LGBT and Africa. Find the common link. He influences 12,000 people, but no big names at the top. However, he pays a lot of attention to MSNBC’s Dylan Ratigan, The Daily Caller‘s Matt Lewis and The New Yorker‘s Ryan Lizza.

NBC’s Andrea Mitchell: MSNBC anchor. She likes to tweet about food, coffee and photography. The people she most influences appear to be just a bunch of fans but her tweets are influenced by Herman Cain, Mitt Romney and Politico. Her Klout score is up there at 63.

Dave Weigel (couldn’t do it without him): Political reporter for Slate. His Klout is scored at an impressive 75. Some topics he deals in most on Twitter include earthquakes, Sarah Palin and job search. Sadly, the person he influences most is an account dedicated to Weigel: @Weigelisbored. The top three people who influence him are Politico‘s Smith and Jonathan Martin and new addition to Slate, Matthew Yglesias.

To be fair, we Klouted ourselves, too…

FishbowlDC: Yours truly. Our Kout score is a respectable 54. A few topics we apparently like to tweet about: Coma, guitar and Barbara Walters. Who’s paying attention to us: Sirius XM’s Julie Mason, FishbowlDC’s Matt Dornic and Washingtonian‘s Carol Joynt. Our biggest influences are, who else? Dave Weigel, Chuck Todd, Ezra Klein and Chris Hayes.

And we learned this fun fact: Judy Kurtz (a.k.a. Howdy Judy, Howeesha, Howlma) told us the nickname her friends call her. It’s Jew-dog. or Ju-dog. It was this Fishbowl writer’s first encounter with her. A pleasure to meet you, Howiella.

Reporter Insults ‘Morning Joe,’ Gets Noticed

In an unusual twist this morning, a Washington conservative reporter’s insults to MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” have landed him an invitation on the show this week. So far, it’s not formal — the bookers haven’t called and scheduled the Town Car. But Willie Geist said pointedly on air that he wanted Lewis on this week. He also called him “our friend from The Daily Caller,” so feelings aren’t hostile.

The discussion on “Morning Joe” this morning has centered on GOP Presidential hopefuls. Guests have included Newsweek/The Daily Beast‘s Editor-in-Chief Tina Brown amidst other liberal leaning journalists, including “Hardball” Host Chris Matthews, host Mika Brzezinksi and branding specialist Donny Deutsch, who made a valid point about the weirdness of Herman Cain‘s hat and got unfairly ragged on by the Peanut Gallery.

Speaking of valid points, Lewis’s tweets peaked the curiosity of Geist, who praised the reporter for his criticisms and read two in full: 1. “Great diversity on MoJoe right now: The left and the FAR left — all diagnosing the GOP’s problems.” 2. “MoJoe cast discussing GOP candidates the way anthropologists might discuss a remote tribe just discovered deep in a rain forest somewhere.”

As Geist read the tweets, Mika initially remarked,  “Uh oh.” Willie said, “Not an unfair critique.” And Mike Barnicle: “That’s true actually.” After he read the second tweet, Willie added, “One hundred percent true.” And Mika: “It’s a nicer look at things than the ones I am getting.” Barnicle scolded Mika for reading hateful tweets: “Why are you reading those?”

The conclusion, however, came from Willie: “Let’s get Matt Lewis on this week.”

Quotes of the Day

“The problem for the media is there is no stained blue dress.” — The Daily Caller‘s media writer Matt Lewis on Sunday CNN’s “Reliable Sources” while discussing the sexual harassment accusations against GOP Presidential hopeful Herman Cain. Lewis’ remark set off a heated discussion on the program as another guest, Newsweek/Daily Beast‘s Lauren Ashburn, spoke bluntly of the sexual harassment she endured, including a boss’s boss who spoke about her “rack” in the workplace. Ashburn says the subject needs to be a national conversation, that women’s accusations must be taken seriously. She would not discuss an incident her mother experienced, saying sheepishly, “It involves underwear and it’s my mother and I really can’t do that.”

The Senate has a ‘Banging’ Committee?

“Closed captions on Meet the Press just said Chris Dodd was chairman of the Senate ‘banging’ committee. #transcriberfail” — Roll Call‘s Ryan Teague Beckwith. Beckwith has officially redeemed himself after communicating with chewy granola bars online.

Congratulations to Slate‘s John Dickerson on becoming CBS News’ new Political Director. Dickerson, who had been a CBS News Political Analyst, had rough start to his new expanded roll this weekend as GOP Presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann received an accidental email from him saying she wouldn’t get much play at the CBS/NJ debate. Dickerson remarked on Sunday, “Thanks everyone for your good wishes, support, humor and friendship over this last exciting and strange 24 hours.”

Have an issue with Weingarten? Take it up with the NYT

“Have you found that the folks who brag the most that they have deep faith and love God more than you do tend to be the ones who, like, get caught nude with a goat?” — WaPo‘s Gene Weingarten on faith and Christ and running for President. (At the end of his piece he noted, “If this has riled you at all, by all means write to me in care of the New York Times.)

Beauty and the Guido: “Colorado’s rocked so far! At the Steamboat Institute now and hung out with @michellemalkin yesterday.” — Washington’s version of “The Situation” Jason Mattera, Editor of Human Events, in a Friday tweet with the accompanying photograph. They tried it once in the mid-90′s but never spoke of it again.

Media elitism

“I go to Whole Foods, other people go to Walmart. There’s a difference.” — The Daily Caller media writer Matt Lewis on media elitism and what it means on CNN’s “Reliable Sources” on Sunday in response to Texas GOP Gov. and presidential hopeful Rick Perry getting “pounded by the press.” Lewis remarked that this cultural bias is even more prevalent than a liberal bias. Later he opined that President Obama going to “hoity-toity” Martha’s Vineyard doesn’t make for good optics.

Kurtz on Magical Self-Pimp Tour of ‘Reliable Sources’

Howard Kurtz, the Daily Beast‘s Washington bureau chief and host of CNN’s “Reliable Sources” may be the worst offender in D.C. when it comes to promoting his own show and the flattering comments he gets on Twitter. He seems to have gotten into a four-tweet routine, two pre-show and two post-show. Observe.

This weekend:

  • Lara Logan assault & the code of silence on Reliable Sources at 11et, with Donatella Lorch, Judith Matloff & Salon’s Mary Elizabeth Williams
  • “We’ll also talk budget, Wisconsin & political coverage on Reliable Sources, with Christina Bellantoni, Michael Medved & John Aravosis

Last weekend (we especially like the repetition with the Gawker story here):

  • Kara Swisher, Felix Salmon, Mark Potts on Reliable Sources at 11et on AOL/Arianna; plus Rachel Sklar, Matt Lewis and hard look at Egypt cove.”
  • “Also on Reliable Sources today: Gawker‘s Maureen O’Connor, whose shirtless-photos story brought down a congressman.”
