Amid Cover Controversy, TIME Ups Duffy And Jones

TimelogoTIME Executive Editor and Washington Bureau Chief Michael Duffy and Executive Editor Radhika Jones have been promoted to Deputy Managing Editors, according to an internal memo from TIME Managing Editor Nancy Gibbs. Duffy, a long-time Washington hand, who has been at TIME since 1985 and Executive editor since 2011, has been in the news recently, defending his magazine’s controversial “Chris Christie is a Big Fat Elephant” cover.

He explained to Chris Matthews yesterday, ”Well, [Christie]‘s obviously a big guy. He’s obviously a big Republican. But he’s also done a really huge thing here this week.” Nice save, Mike.

Duffy has shepherded big cover stories all year at TIME, like April’s story about the “Latino Reformation” and “Bitter Pill” about exorbitant hospital costs.

Jones came to TIME from the Paris Review in 2008 and was also promoted to Executive Editor in 2011. She has taken over their core features such as Person of the Year and the TIME 100. She has also introduced Interview-style interviews to TIME, enlisting Michael Bloomberg to interview Jay-Z and Barack Obama to intervew Tom Coburn, among others.

TIME Cover Focuses on Clubby D.C.

The new cover of TIME is titled, “THE WORLD’S MOST EXCLUSIVE CLUB, The Secret Society of Presidents.”

In this week’s cover story, Nancy Gibbs and Michael Duffy look at the private relationships among the living U.S. Presidents — the backroom deals, rescue missions and rivalries — that have marked modern American history.

The cover story is adapted from their forthcoming book, The Presidents Club, and brings to light new details, including: The first two calls Barack Obama placed on the night that the SEALs killed Osama bin Laden was to George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

TIME’s D.C. Bureau Chief Upped to Exec. Editor

TIME‘s Washington Bureau Chief Michael Duffy is being promoted to Executive Editor of the magazine. He will remain in Washington with the additional title.

Congratulations to Duffy!

See the internal memo from John Huey and Rick Stengel…it’s actually interesting and they give Duffy the highest praise, calling him a “major source of practical wisdom.” They say he does so much, but he does it “discreetly.”
