wapo logo304x200WaPo‘s deputy Local editor Mike Semel has been promoted to Local editor, according to a memo released today. Semel has been deputy Local editor since 2011, and previously served as Virginia editor and cops/courts editor. Semel came to WaPo in 200o from The Bergen Record in New Jersey, where he was assistant managing editor in charge of news coverage. He had previously worked at The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk and some smaller papers in New Jersey. Semel has been central to WaPo‘s coverage of some of the biggest stories of the past decade-plus, including the 9/11 attacks, the trials of both D.C. snipers, the Virginia Tech shootings, and the Navy Yard shootings.
