DC Magazine Celebrates Annual Nightlife Issue with Summer Soiree

20140617_194702Tuesday night at Frye in Georgetown, DC Magazine hosted a party in celebration of its annual nightlife issue. In the Modern Luxury June issue are “20 Unique Ways to Spend Your Summer Nights,” including Jay-Z and Beyonce’s On The Run tour stop in Baltimore on July 7, the summer ready U Street Penthouse Pool and Lounge, and the annual Citi Open.

The evening also featured a lucky recipient of Frye boots – Ballston BID’s Allie Krafft - chosen alongside DC senior editor Katie Bianco.

“Allie was super cute and fashionable, and she ended up picking a pair of boots I had already been drooling over earlier in the evening!” said Bianco. “I love the sexy zipper that goes up the back of the boot, but the style is also classic. She’ll be able to wear them for years.”

DC Magazine Names New Editor-in-Chief

DC Magazine announced Michael McCarthy on Thursday as its new editor-in-chief.

“With Michael’s enthusiasm for the luxury lifestyle and Washington, D.C., we’re thrilled to have him steer DC through what we confidently agree will be its best era,” said Beth Weitzman, editorial vice president of Modern Luxury, which owns DC Magazine. “His citywide expertise—combined with his superior skills as a communicator, editor and writer—will continue to give the magazine insider savvy both in print and online.”

McCarthy replaces former DC editor Karen Sommer Shalett.

He’s a D.C. native and third generation Washingtonian, according to a press release.  His prior experience includes 15 years of lifestyle editing and writing for both national and regional magazines. McCarthy also served as content director and editor-in-chief for several publications under custom publisher McMurry/TMG.

“We are thrilled to have Michael join our growing team. He is the perfect fit to continue our momentum as the local leader in luxury and lifestyle publishing,” said DC publisher Peter Abrahams. “His experience and enthusiasm will be a driving force as we launch Front Desk this spring and new products in the months to follow.” Front Desk is a luxury style magazine already distributed at hotels in Chicago, New York and San Francisco.

McCarthy starts Mar. 4.

DC’s Ultra-Hip Birthday Bash

EIC Karen Sommer Shalett and Publisher Peter Abrahams

The top floor and roof of PNC Place were transformed into a uber-chic lounge last Thursday evening for the fifth anniversary of DC magazine.  Guests such as big-deal businessman and Washington Kastles owner Mark Ein, reality stars Rich and Mary Amons and several folks from the Obama Administration joined DC EIC Karen Sommer Shalett and Publisher Peter Abrahams for scenic views, hip tunes, culinary treats by Ridgewells  and a variety of wet bars (FishbowlDC remembers the Jack Daniels and Kettle One bars but everything beyond that is kind of a blur).

On hand to celebrate were the new owners of the mag’s parent company, Modern Luxury.  Representing Dickey Publishing and Cumulus Broadcasting (the second largest broadcaster in the country) were the company’s president, Michael Dickey and Beth Weitzman, the organization’s Vice President of Editorial.   Media-types spotted include Real Housewives of DC’s Paul Wharton, Politico’s Kiki Ryan, CBS’s Christine Delargy, Tim Burger, Kelly DiNardo and Rosen Group VP Zachary Hooper

DC Magazine Publisher: Issue Has ‘Hot’ the Street

41436.2.jpg

“Our Restaurant issue has hot [sic] the street. Our best yet. Thanks foe [sic] the great feedback. I am going to work my way through the issue bit …”

Spelling errors aside, we were trying hard to decipher whether DC Magazine’s Publisher Peter Abrahams in a weekend tweet was attempting subliminal messaging (hot and foe) or a new hipster way of speaking … or did the oppressive heat finally take hold?

Abrahams is not notoriously a bad speller — previous posts show he usually gets it right.

White Out with DC Mag

With the help of DC magazine, Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams got white hot last night. The 14th St. furniture boutique held their annual White Party, complete with famed New York music maven, DJ Lady Bunny, two open bars and a slew of desserts. FishbowlDC ran into Fox 5′s Will Thomas, Katherine Kennedy, Paul Wharton, Facebook’s Andrew Noyes and of course, DC’s Peter Abrahams and Martha Pheeny.

A Buddha Blessing for DC Mag’s New Issue

New “it” spot Buddha Bar helped DC magazine publisher Peter Abrahams and EIC Karen Sommer Shalett roll out their latest issue with a swanky party last night. The palatial dining room with grand chandeliers, an 18-foot Buddha statue and glowing DJ booth made for an exotic and fitting setting to celebrate the magazine’s travel issue.

Guests like Project Beltway’s Rachel Cothran, PR guy Peter Mirijanian and Washington’s pied piper of single ladies, Andy Baldwin noshed on sushi and other Asian delicacies while pretty bar tenders served a packed house an array of specialty cocktails from an open bar.

Last night was the 4th and Mass St NW lounge’s third night of grand opening celebrations that began on Tuesday with a Washington Life party.
