POLITICO Launches Annual 10-Day Journalism Institute

POLITICO today announced the launch of its Journalism Institute, a 10-day annual program for college students interested in pursuing a political journalism career in Washington. Bill Nichols will direct the program alongside Kara Kearns, who will assist in its organization.

Senior editors and reporters from POLITICO will lead much of the program’s content. It is also tied to the American University School of Communication and the Maynard Institute for Journalism Education.

The POLITICO Journalism Institute will launch July 31 and the deadline to apply is June 27.

POLITICO Hires ‘Citizen Journo’ Daniel Lippman for Playbook

fc8fef994c6d7779cb66a4310822f4dc_400x400POLITICO’s executive editor Rick Berke last hour announced the full-time hire of Daniel Lippman. Lippman was profiled by POLITICO Click (R.I.P.) in 2009 for his email correspondence with DC media often identifying corrections and grammatical errors and offering suggestions – this when he was just a 19-year-old student at GW.

Lippman is set to serve as a researcher/reporter, with primary duties helping Mike Allen on Playbook and Capital Playbook. He has interned for The Wall Street Journal, McClatchy Newspapers, and Reuters.

Where Are They Now? New York Times Edition

The New York TimesHuffPo’s Michael Calderone wonders if the The New York Times has a retention problem. The answer: “Good Lord, Yes!”

In just the last few months, he notes, the list of former high-profile Timesmen and women has swelled to include:

Nate Silver (now at ESPN/ABC), Brian Stelter (CNN), Matt Bai (Yahoo News), Megan Liberman (Yahoo News), David Pogue (Yahoo News), Jeff Zeleny (ABC), Susan Saulny (ABC), Lisa Tozzi (BuzzFeed), Judy Battista (NFL/NFL.com), Howard Beck (Bleacher Report), Rick Berke (Politico), and Eric Wilson (InStyle)

From Calderone’s article:

The Times has long enjoyed a position atop the media pecking order and the cachet of working at the “Paper of Record” remains both a draw for recruiting talent and keeping it. But it’s no longer the case that the Times can rely on prestige alone as talent fields competitive offers from both TV networks and also online sites that can pay significantly more money, provide greater journalistic freedom and offer multi-platform visibility — or some combination of the three.

Politico’s Harris Introduces Berke to Staff

imagesIn an internal memo, Politico Editor-in-Chief John Harris introduces his new right hand man, Rick Berke, to staff.

Shall we call them Rarris or Herke? We’ll mull it over.

In the meantime, see the lengthy memo in which Harris says they internally discussed needing a “Rick Berke-type.” Hey, why not the real thing? “This is a big deal,” he writes.
