Cordes Goes Under the Big Top for JDRF

CBS News’ Nancy Cordes took a break from covering Capitol Hill to join more than 500 Washingtonians at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s (JDRF) 11th annual Night of Hope Gala this weekend.  The bubbly congressional correspondent served as emcee for the circus-themed event, which raised $1 million for diabetes research, through a seated dinner, live and silent auctions, and three rings of entertainment.  Cordes was joined under the Big Top by super committee member Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) who was honored with JDRF’s Congressional Champion Award on Saturday evening.

Spotted mingling and sipping cotton-candy-topped cocktails at the National Building Museum were Ward Sloane and Christine Delargy of CBS News, WaPo’s Rebecca D’Angelo, Laura Barron-Lopez from Roll Call, The Hill’s Kate Oczypok, Boehner spokesman Mike Steel and Mary Kathryn Covert, Jack and Susanna Quinn, K Street Kate’s Kate Michael, and DC Councilman David Catania.

*PSA:  Don’t forget to hug a diabetic in November – it’s Diabetes Awareness month.

CBS News’s D.C. Bureau Stars

CBS News reeled in seven Emmy awards last night. Some journalists in CBS News’s Washington bureau are to be commended for winning an Emmy for “OUTSTANDING INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM IN A REGULARLY SCHEDULED NEWSCAST.”

The Emmy was awarded for Rape in America: Justice Denied which appeared on the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric. D.C.-based Laura Strickler, an investigative producer, worked on that story.

Another Emmy was awarded for BEST STORY IN A REGULARLY SCHEDULED NEWSCAST. The story was The Battle of Wanat. Those in the D.C. Bureau who worked on this story include National Security Correspondent David Martin, Senior Producer Ward Sloane and Producer Mary Walsh.

Congratulations to all.

Shhh…They’re Talking Baseball

And now we bring you guys talking sports, complete with trash talk.

The most recent CBS’s “Washington Unplugged” features CBS “Face the Nation” host Bob Schieffer and other CBS male network employeees who dressed up in sports attire to do what Schieffer says they do though the boss might not know it – they talk baseball.

“We’ll put foreign policy aside and talk about what we usually talk about in the newsroom,” said Schieffer. The roundtable includes Bob Orr, the justice and homeland security correspondent, Ward Sloane, the evening news editor, and Rob Hendin, White House producer.

(I’m not qualified to explain what they’re talking about.)
