The FishbowlDC Interview With Gossip Gal Nikki Schwab

fishhead.jpg

yay-and-nays.jpgSay hello to Nikki Schwab, one half of the Washington Examiner’s Yeas and Nays gossip column. (She’s the blond.)

If you were a carbonated beverage which would you be? Am I allowed to say beer? It’s not high maintenance and generally a good time.

How often do you Google yourself? I usually leave that to my folks, who let me know if anything creepy comes up when they Google my name.

Who is your favorite working journalist?John Heilemann–even before I read “Game Change” I was a fan of his column in New York Magazine.

Did you see “Twilight” and “New Moon?” If so, who is more your type, Edward or Jacob? You’re seriously going to force me to admit this? Alright – Team Edward all the waaaayyyyy!

Who would you rather have dinner with – First Lady Michelle Obama or Bestselling Author and former V.P. candidate Sarah Palin? Palin. I’m fascinated by the concept of a moose burger.

When did you last cry and why? My birthday is in January, so every year my best friends come into town and, as a gift, bring me a ridiculous calendar. This year’s was particularly absurd and I laughed so hard that I started to cry.

What word do you routinely misspell? Stephanopoulos and surprised.

What’s the name of your cell phone ring? “Old Phone” – on my very new iPhone.

What swear word do you use most often? Fudge.

What word or phrase do you overuse? “Fail”. I say it all the time.

What TV show do you have to watch? I’ll give you a hint – it involves Ron Ron Juice and a character named Snooki. (And also happens to make it onto the Yeas & Nays page a little too often.)

Where do you shop most often for your clothes? I’m a huge fan of ModCloth.com. They have unique dresses for cheap, and are based out of Pittsburgh.

Who do you prefer for daytime talk, Dr. Phil, Oprah, Tyra or the women of The View? None of the above. I’m a nighttime girl. And that distinction goes to Dr. Stephen T. Colbert.

If you were trapped on a deserted island, which public official would you want to be trapped with and why? The obvious answer is Rep. Jeff Flake. See here: http://tinyurl.com/yzpnzqz

Who was your mentor? I’ve had a ton, but I’ll give shout-outs to two: My journalism professor at Pitt, Cindy Skrzycki, for helping me to find my way to Washington, and, of course, the great Paul Bedard.

What’s the best advice you ever received in the course of your career? From my parents, both former journalists, upon my decision to go to J-school over law school: “You’re going to drive a Dodge Neon for the rest of your life.” That got me prepared for the not-so-stellar salary, though I’ve found it has definitely been worth the ride.

What and where was your first job in journalism? Gateway Newspapers in Monroeville, Pennsylvania. Though my first paying job was at U.S. News & World Report.

WhatÂ’s your most embarrassing career moment? Singing Karaoke in front of Bob Schieffer and other D.C. journos. I was given a “Nay” for my singing ability.

Which one interview of your career did you enjoy most? Sarah Jessica Parker – she was kind and well-informed.

What’s the biggest scoop youÂ’ve ever had?Because of the nature of what I cover I usually get little scooplets. One that comes to my head is that David Plouffe was nervous about Gov. Jon Huntsman in 2012. Soon after, Huntsman was tapped to become the United States Ambassador to China.
