WaPo Cartoonist Hosts Caption Contest

Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post cartoonist Tom Toles is holding a caption contest for his upcoming State of the Union cartoon. This is the cartoonist’s first caption contest. “My readers are always sending me cartoon ideas that I never use,” Toles told FishbowlDC, “so I thought I’d meet them halfway.”

Though he didn’t know what the caption ought to be when he first drew the cartoon, he admitted that he gave it some thought. Not surprisingly, he remained mum on it. “That remains my own little secret,” he said coyly.

The cartoon, with an empty speech bubble:

Submissions are being accepted until 11:59 p.m. on January 24, the night before POTUS is scheduled to deliver the State of the Union address. The winner will receive a print of the cartoon with his or her caption and signed by Toles.

Read the official rules and submit your caption ideas here.
