WaPo Sets New Guidelines for Events

Yesterday afternoon, Marcus Brauchli notified WaPo staff that new guidelines for the newsroom’s participation in conferences and special events had been completed. Brauchli said:

The guidelines are important to upholding our journalistic independence and credibility, and when followed will help to ensure our integrity. They will be posted on The Source as part of our effort to overhaul and update our standards and ethics policies.

Created by Eric Lieberman and Milton Coleman, the guidelines were drafted in response to Katherine Weymouth‘s “Salon” debacle last summer.

Colleagues,

Last summer, Katharine Weymouth and I asked Eric Lieberman and Milton
Coleman to work together to draft guidelines governing the newsroomÂ’s
participation in conferences and other live events. Those guidelines have now been completed.

The guidelines are important to upholding our journalistic independence and credibility, and when followed will help to ensure our integrity. They will be posted on The Source as part of our effort to overhaul and update our standards and ethics policies.

Raju Narisetti will oversee the news department’s participation in
conferences and events. He will work with Jenny Abramson, the newly
appointed general manager of the conferences and events business.

If you have questions, Milton, Raju, Liz Spayd and I are available to
discuss the guidelines and any related issues that may arise.
