AP Updates Style Book to Accommodate Social Media

blog06022010.pngThe Associated Press, arbiter of copy cleanliness since 1953, has added a new section to its Style Book to accommodate such newfangled terminology as “app,” “blogs” and “click-throughs,” among others.

Our favorite update, besides the much-vaunted “Web site” to “website” transition (spurred by a social media – friendly solicitation of reader responses), is the addition of the transitive verb “to friend.” We’ve been friending people for ages, unwittingly transgressing against the Associated Press’ best practices. We’re relieved to find that this is no longer the case.

For more, check out Mashable’s embed of the new style guidelines (it’s where we got that pretty screengrab) and our sister site WebNewser’s take.
