David Zahniser Moves to LA Times–Look Out, Mr. Mayor!

The LA Weekly loses David Zahniser to the LA Times. The veteran City Hall reporter will be covering Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Kevin Roderick at LA Observed observes:

I don’t know what it means for Duke Helfand, who has been on the Antonio beat for the Times, but the hire should mean sharper, deeper and less friendly coverage of the mayor.

Zahniser’s story on the murk surrounding the death of Miguel Contreras pissed off Harold Meyerson so much, Meyerson left the Weekly. His recent story on smart growth pissed off Curbed LA readers. Obviously, he’s doing something right.

Zahniser joined the Weekly in 2006, coming from the Copley News Service. He received a Journalist of the Year award by the LA Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, in 2006.
