Leigh Steinberg Papers Another ‘Irrelevant Week’ Banquet

Annual “Irrelevant Week” festivities, a series of charity events honoring the last player picked in the NFL draft, are in full swing in Newport Beach.

This year’s celebrant – prospective Indianapolis Colts quarterback Chandler Harnish – got started yesterday by hitting Disneyland and the Dunes. Tonight, per former super-agent Leigh Steinberg’s most recent column in the Daily Pilot, it will be time for the All Star Lowsman Banquet at the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel:

For the last 23 years, I have been the official “Irrelevant Week” agent assigned to represent the player. Since I have represented the first player picked in the first round in eight separate drafts I have the task to negotiate a contract for the evening’s festivities. It always has the largest signing bonus, because in Irrelevant World, the last shall be first. And it is chocked with incentive clauses such as “Player shall not be required to practice on any day that ends in the letter ‘Y.’ I emphasize that the contract is worth the paper it is printed on.

Tomorrow’s holiday will be equally busy for Harnish. He will take part in Newport Beach’s Old Glory Boat Parade and guest-bartend at a couple of different local establishments. Who knew getting picked 253rd could be this much fun?
