Rosie O’Donnell to The View (TMZ)
Rosie O’Donnell has made a deal with The View, sources say. The show is likely to make the announcement shortly. TVNewser In the wake of TMZ’s report, there is increased speculation that the new right-leaning panelist will come from the cable news ranks. Abby Huntsman, co-host of MSNBC’s The Cycle and Margaret Hoover, a CNN contributor, are being considered as co-hosts. Mediaite O’Donnell was famously one of the show’s co-hosts from 2006 to 2007. The TMZ report also says The View is actively seeking out conservative women to join the show. Sarah Palin put herself out there this week as a possibility. HuffPost O’Donnell left the show after a notorious on-air fight with Elisabeth Hasselbeck. She has been a guest on the show since then. O’Donnell’s return is the first step in the show’s overhaul. The View has seen the exit of all of its co-hosts except Goldberg this season: Sherri Shepherd and Jenny McCarthy recently announced their exits, and Barbara Walters retired in May. Variety ABC daytime execs are in the midst of a extensive search for new producers to take the reins of The View as the show prepares to replace most of its panelists for its 18th season.

Amazon Angles to Attract Hachette’s Authors to Its Side (NYT / Bits)
The confrontation between Amazon and Hachette is growing louder and meaner, as the combatants drop all pretense that this is a reasonable dispute among reasonable people. Amazon has proposed giving Hachette’s authors all the revenue from their eBook sales on Amazon as the parties continue to negotiate a new contract. WSJ Hachette quickly rejected the proposal. Amazon advanced the idea in a letter sent in recent days to a handful of authors and agents. Mashable The proposal, from David Naggar, vice president of Amazon Publishing, claims that Hachette has been slow to respond to Amazon’s attempts to negotiate, and shines some light on the standoff that eventually led to the now-public issue. The dispute between Amazon and Hachette came to the media’s attention in May when Amazon began blocking preorders for upcoming books from the publisher. GigaOM The idea outlined in Naggar’s letter is somewhat similar to an idea that Amazon had earlier proposed, in its public statement on the contract dispute: “We’ve offered to Hachette to fund 50 percent of an author pool — to be allocated by Hachette — to mitigate the impact of this dispute on author royalties, if Hachette funds the other 50 percent. We did this with the publisher Macmillan some years ago. We hope Hachette takes us up on it.”

The Atlantic Announces Several Promotions, Hires (FishbowlNY)
The Atlantic has announced a few promotions and hires. Alexis Madrigal has been promoted from senior editor of The Atlantic to deputy editor of TheAtlantic.com, a new role at the magazine. He has covered science and technology for the glossy since 2010. New York Observer In the newly created position, Madrigal will work with the site’s editor J.J. Gould on the direction and daily coverage of the magazine’s marquee website. He will also oversee social media and the growing field of newsletter strategy, a part of the role that he is well positioned for due to his experience with his own daily email, 5 Intriguing Things. FishbowlDC In addition to his promotion, Dr. James Hamblin was named a senior editor. Julie Beck will replace Hamblin as editor of its Health channel and Kathy Gilsinan will join the Global channel as an associate editor from World Politics Review. FishbowlDC Atlantic Media also launched its expansion from federal government current events coverage for Government Executive to city, county, and state government news and analysis. The new line of focus will include coverage of technology, health care, citizen services, infrastructure, security, transportation and finance.

Cosmo Revamps Website (FishbowlNY)
Cosmopolitan.com has received quite a makeover. The site is slicker, faster and cleaner than the old version. Yes, it has the “mobile look” that many people don’t like — featuring the clickable menu in the upper lefthand corner of the page — but Cosmo’s isn’t as clunky as some we’ve seen. WWD / Memo Pad The revamp is essentially the template that Hearst will use for the websites of all of its 18 magazines. The rollout will take place over the next 12 months, with Elle getting the next digital touch-up. Capital New York In the 10 months since Amy Odell joined Cosmopolitan.com, the young women’s lifestyle site has, according to Hearst’s internal measurements, increased its monthly content production by 75 percent, come close to doubling its unique visitors year-over-year, and quadrupled the numbers of stories its readers shared on social media. With almost 30 million unique visitors this May, Cosmopolitan.com brought in nearly a third of all the traffic that came to Hearst magazine websites that month.

Dean Baquet’s First Digital Initiative: Adding Editors (Capital New York)
The New York Times is adding deputy-level editors assigned to increase the volume and quality of its digital product. They’ll sit in each of the paper’s major editorial departments, executive editor Dean Baquet announced in a staff memo. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media The new deputies will be assigned to International, National, Metro, Sports, Biz Day, Culture, Science, The Magazine and Media. They will sit in their respective departments and help train reporters in social media and audience development. Poynter / MediaWire According to the memo, the new editors will be in charge of increasing the “energy and imagination” of the Times’ news report. Baquet emphasizes that the new positions will be a part of a “leadership path” for journalists at the Times who have “spent years honing their digital crafts.”

Happy 125th Birthday, WSJ (FishbowlNY)
Tuesday was the Wall Street Journal’s 125th anniversary. To help celebrate, we played around with some of the interactive features the Journal launched for the occasion. Forbes The newspaper had a special wrap covering, harkening back to the first A1 page it ever printed. In addition to the front cover, there was also a special section titled “The Future of Everything,” which is a collection of essays from leaders in the worlds of everything from technology to music to the general business world. The paper recruited names like Facebook’s founder Mark Zuckerberg, supermodel Tyra Banks, Morgan Stanley’s CEO James P. Gorman and even Taylor Swift. TVSpy The Journal published an essay by Swift on the future of the music business, where she argues all is not lost in the face of declining sales, piracy, streaming and audiences facing an endless sea of digital distractions. “Music is art, and art is important and rare. Kate Juergens to Exit as ABC Family Programming Chief (Variety)
Kate Juergens is exiting her post as head of programming for ABC Family. Juergens has been with the cabler since 2004, most recently serving as exec VP of original programming and chief creative officer. THR As part of an internal restructuring of business strategy, planning and development, and scheduling and acquisitions departments, Lynn Stepanian, senior VP acquisitions and scheduling, will also be leaving as the position will be eliminated. Juergens has been with ABC Family since 2004, helping create the network’s brand-defining scripted programs including The Secret Life of The American Teenager, Pretty Little Liars, Switched at Birth, The Fosters and Chasing Life. She was charged with overseeing and being responsible for the creation of the network’s primetime original series, movies and specials.

Discovery Will Rebrand Fit & Health Channel As Discovery Life (Deadline Hollywood)
Can Discovery Communications breathe some Life into Fit & Health? It’s going to try by converting the network into Discovery Life Channel on Jan. 15. Capital New York The new channel, which will target adults 25-54, and in particular women, will still feature health-related programming, but will also expand to include a focus on life events, such as relationships. Discovery Life has more than 10 new series in development for launch, the company said.

19 Star Tribune Vets Take Voluntary Buyouts (Minnesota Public Radio / NewsCut)
Roughly a dozen-and-a-half staffers have taken voluntary buyouts and will be leaving the Minneapolis Star Tribune. The Newspaper Guild said the departing members have 586 years of newspaper experience. Poynter / MediaWire Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor closed on the purchase of the newspaper last week. Joe Kimball reported for MinnPost that most will leave by July 18. The newsroom has about 250 people left.

José Díaz-Balart Debuts Monday on MSNBC (TVNewser)
José Díaz-Balart will debut Monday in the 10 a.m. timeslot on MSNBC, the network announced Tuesday. Díaz-Balart, who was announced as the 10 a.m. host in May, replaces Chris Jansing, who was recently named NBC senior White House correspondent. The show, José Díaz-Balart, will be anchored from Miami and will “feature in-depth interviews with world newsmakers, political commentators and daily coverage on an array of U.S. and international news,” according to MSNBC. Díaz-Balart will continue to co-anchor Telemundo’s Noticiero Telemundo and host Enfoque con José Díaz-Balart.

Shawna Thomas to Join NBC’s Meet The Press as Senior Editor (FishbowlDC)
As of July 16, Shawna Thomas will join Meet The Press as senior editor responsible for leading its digital strategy. Thomas joins the show having been with the network since 2006, serving as White House producer and Capitol Hill producer as well as a news associate, political assignment editor and digital associate producer.

Guardian U.S. to Open West Coast Office (Politico / Dylan Byers on Media)
The Guardian U.S. is planning an expansion of its editorial team that will include the addition a West Coast office, it announced Tuesday. The announcement comes in the wake of a banner year for the Guardian‘s stateside outfit, including 12 percent digital growth, a doubling of revenue and a Pulitzer Prize for its reporting on Edward Snowden’s NSA leaks. With a West Coast office, The Guardian hopes to “accelerate its commercial and digital presence, leveraging business and technology links in Silicon Valley and other parts of California,” it said in a news release.

Chellomedia Rebranded as AMC Networks International (Deadline Hollywood)
AMC Networks completed its $1 billion acquisition of Liberty Global’s Chellomedia in February. Tuesday, it announced a re-brand of the group to AMC Networks International. AMC Networks International will also encompass AMC/Sundance Channel Global, which operates in Europe, Latin America, the Mid-East and Asia.

HSN Looks to Entertainment Programming, Promotes Bill Brand (THR)
HSN is expanding the role of exec Bill Brand. The chief marketing officer at parent company HSNi now assumes the role of president of its flagship channel. Brand will retain his old title while leading the push to make the retail effort more similar to its entertainment-focused contemporaries. Brand assumes the role of network president with a TV background that includes programming positions at both Lifetime and VH1. In his expanded role, he will assume responsibility of merchandising, programming, planning and spinoff net HSN2.

NBC’s Erika Masonhall Promoted to VP (Politico / Dylan Byers on Media)
Erika Masonhall, an NBC News spokeswoman, has been promoted to vice president of communications, the network said Tuesday. The promotion formalizes a role Masonhall has had since September, when Ali Zelenko took over as senior vice president. Masonhall will continue to oversee press relations for NBC Nightly News, Meet The Press and special events, as well as all Washington and international coverage. Her colleague Megan Kopf oversees the Today show and Dateline.
