NYT.com Takes ‘The Local’ Route

editorial.jpgThe New York Times may have shuttered its stand alone Metro section last year but the website is gearing up to go super local, with the help of the locals.

The Times is launching a new site on its homepage dubbed ‘The Local‘ (it doesn’t seem to be live yet) which will cover a number of communities in Brooklyn and New Jersey. According to E&P the site will primarily feature content from local contributors and will be overseen by Times staffers Tina Kelley, in New Jersey, and Andy Newman, in Brooklyn who have already been recruiting.

Says Jim Schachter, Times editor/digital initiatives: “These are pilots. The way we are doing the pilots is a New York Times metro reporter who will be an anchor person on each of these and lead the community in reporting on these sites…I don’t think we would expect to get the exact same thing that we would get from a New York Times reporter. One of the qualities that we bring to the plan is our good judgment.”

Next stop, the Times purchasing Brownstoner?!
