NYT Launches Times Machine

Fresh off this morning’s Mediabistro Circus keynote address comes the launch of The New York TimesTimes Machine. The Machine offers access to digital archives of the paper that date from September 18, 1851 through December 30, 1922, but is currently only available to home delivery subscribers. We can’t imagine purchasing a subscription for this feature alone, but it’s the perfect value-add for a history buff who already does. Times Co. brass hope the Machine, and ideas like it, will help push readers who favor print into the online space, eventually increasing digital’s share beyond 20 percent of the paper’s overall revenue.

Aron Pilhofer
, editor of interactive news, touted the New York Times Co.’s ability to build features quickly on the Web, but the launch of the Times Machine has been a long time in coming.
