Reason Magazine Casts a Vote in Favor of Video Game Nation

Some might argue that there’s nothing hilarious or dumb about the ten quotes highlighted as such in the June 2014 issue of Reason magazine. But whether it’s that compilation of pronouncements by pundits and politicians, a take-down of video game-inspired “moral panics” or the consideration of video games as art, the gang at Reason has come out in full support of Video Game Nation.

We assume then that the cover illustration by Martin Asin, featuring disrupted domestic bliss and a needlessly objectified woman, is tongue-in-cheek. From the issue feature by Matthew Feeney about one of today’s massive multi-player online communities:

EVE Online players are not demographically representative of a nation. The culture of New Eden appeals to a fairly specific sort of player, observes Dmitri Williams of the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.

“Where its players like the lawlessness,” Williams says, “it’s also famously hard to learn and is not for the faint of heart. Its players are anything but typical and representative of other games. Your Candy Crush-playing masses are not going to be happy (or welcome) in EVE.”

Feeney revisits the “Bloodbath of B-R5RB” and ends with an effective article punchline. Whether you agree or not with the Reason POV, it’s a thought-provoking look at an industry that long-ago lapped the Hollywood movie studios.
