Three Journos on Top Ten Anti-Semitic Slurs List

This is definitely an awards season Top Ten List no one wants to be on.

LA’s Simon Wiesenthal Center has unveiled its Top Ten Anti-Semitic Slurs compilation for 2010, and the saddest part of it all is that three – count ‘em, three – journalists are there alongside Oliver Stone, a German government official, a Palestinian Information Ministry mouthpiece and others.

Two are pretty obvious – Helen Thomas (#1) and Rick Sanchez (#7). But the third Fifth Estate infraction is less familiar to North American audiences, courtesy of a July 28th Op Ed that places The Independent‘s Christina Patterson at #9.

I didn’t realize that goyim were about as welcome at the Hasidic Jew shops as Martin Luther King Jr. at a Klu Klux Klan convention.

Patterson was writing about the Stamford Hill area of London’s Hackney district. Her piece overall is actually a pretty pertinent, stinging take-down of multicultural bad manners and the much more serious crime of female circumcision. Still, her editors really should have excised the MLK nightmare reference. (Or, at the very least, not chosen the above passage to excerpt as the article’s bolded sub-headline.)

P.S. At press time, Patterson’s Twitter bio reads: “Writer and columnist for The Independent, and Hitler, apparently (views not the Indy’s, but mine).”

Update – 12/23/10: Patterson has written a new column about being made aware of the Simon Wiesenthal dubious distinction via our Twitter feed (@FishbowlLA), and the feedback that followed at her end.
