Staffers Axed At KCBS 2/KCAL 9

The cuts include morning anchor Suzanne Rico, producer Jeff Soto, and news operations manager Doug Dougherty. And it isn’t all about downsizing. According to Michael Schneider of Variety:

Moves are among the first made by new KCBS/KCAL prexy/GM Steve Mauldin, as well as recently hired news director Scott Diener.

According to insiders, the decision to let some staffers go came after Maudlin and Diener evaluated the news team and decided to make some changes in several positions. The station plans to re-fill most of those jobs.

LA Observed reports that many of those let go “were considered close to former news director Nancy Bauer-Gonzales, who was replaced in January.”

KCBS weatherman Johnny Mountain is also retiring, apparently of his own free will.
