Tony Pierce No Longer at KPCC

It’s been a tumultuous 12 months over at KPCC, what with the departure of Madeleine Brand, demotion of Patt Morrison and – most recently – exit of program director Craig Curtis. Unfortunately, another name can be added to the list: Tony Pierce.

When we first heard about Pierce’s KPCC layoff, it was as much of a surprise to us as his 2011 exit from the LA Times. FishbowlLA contacted Pierce and he was kind enough to give us the following statement:

Yes, it’s true. I was relieved of my duties at KPCC recently. It was quite a shock as I thought I was providing an important and useful service to the Take Two show during the week and to the KPCC website on Saturdays.

But in the ultimate “it’s not you, it’s me” reasoning, I was told it was due to a budget shortfall, and not the quality of my work, that I was being shown the door.

To Chagrin of Handlers, Mayor Villaraigosa Answers Personal Question

Earlier this year, we wrote about LA mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s surprising and shocking admission during an interview with CBS LA reporter Stephanie Abrams. In connection with a city initiative addressing domestic violence, he recalled some deeply personal memories of growing up with an abusive father.

Though not quite as earth shattering, Villaraigosa on Wednesday made another candid revelation during a Q&A at Loyola Marymount. Per a report by KPCC senior online reporter Alice Walton, he admitted that his biggest regret is the way he handled the break-up of his marriage after his affair with a Telemundo reporter became public knowledge:

In an interview with KPCC after the event, the mayor said he believes it is possible to succeed politically while maintaining a strong marriage and family life.

“I think there are a lot of people who have done that a lot better than me. My staff would like me not to answer those questions, but I do it anyway because I think it’s important to be real, and I do think that was the one thing that I looked at and I just didn’t do it right,” Villaraigosa said.

KPCC Adds Politics, Crime Bloggers

Alice Walton, who launched her blog The City Maven in 2010 to cover the goings on at LA City Hall, is graduating to a larger audience. On Monday, she joins KPCC as the station’s politics blogger.

Also announced to staff last night by interim managing editor, digital Eric Zassenhaus is the addition on May 14 of Rina Palta as KPCC.org’s crime blogger. She comes to the station from KALW News 91.7 FM in San Francisco:

Rina has been the lead reporter for KALW’s Informant blog, where she’s been covering criminal justice issues in California since starting there in 2009. Rina was one of the first reporters to focus on the 2008 Secure Communities program that automatically shares the fingerprints of anyone booked in county jails with the Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement. When major newspapers finally realized what was happening, they were playing catch-up with her diligent work.
