This Food Truck Driver Has Seven NBA Championship Rings

We keep thinking the Lakers season cannot get any worse. But today, not long after the team lost its beloved owner and watched a guy the NBA snatched away win All-Star MVP, there is yet another bit of tarnishing information to digest.

It’s not so much that Lakers equipment manager Rudy Garciduenas was let go along with a bunch of other employees in 2011 as part of a Phil Jackson-related purge. That kind of thing happens all the time in sports and indeed, Garciduenas has no ill will towards his former employer. Rather, it’s the way the faithful 26-year employee discovered he was being bounced. Per Bill Plaschke‘s column:

Garciduenas learned of his departure when he received a letter about temporary [COBRA health] insurance… The next day, general manager Mitch Kupchak summoned him to his office to confirm that he was being released as a cost-saving measure.

Bill Plaschke is the Master of Hotel Porn

Listeners of the Petros & Money show on KLAC got to hear a different side of Los Angeles Times columnist Bill Plaschke on Thursday afternoon.

Yeah, yeah, Plaschke did eventually talk about sports, but he opened the show with Matt “Money” Smith discussing hotel porn and Helen Hunt‘s “lady garden.”

I don’t know what was more disturbing: Plaschke waxing poetic about Helen Hunt’s “lady garden” or him implying that he use to get off to the hotel porn previews while on the road.

Either way, I’m good on Plaschke ever having a radio show.

Video: Bill Plaschke Once Ate Penis in China

Eat your heart out, Jonathan Gold.

Los Angeles Times sports columnist Bill Plaschke shared a great story before ESPN’s Around the Horn Friday about the time he ate penis in China.

Don’t believe him? Watch the video.

Happy Friday, folks.

Bill Plaschke to Kobe Bryant: ‘You’re an Asshole’

Playoff time brings out the very worst in Kobe Bryant when it comes to dealing with the media.

He’s notoriously known for his smug and snarky answers during this time of the year and Los Angeles Times sports columnist Bill Plaschke called him out on it following Game 3 of the Los Angeles Lakers-Denver Nuggets Western Conference 1st round series.

Here’s J.A. Adande of ESPN.com explaining the incident:

Props to Plaschke for not backing down to Bryant. The 23-year-old Bryant probably wouldn’t have laughed it off but Kobe, now 33, has finally matured to the point where he can laugh at himself every now and then.

Magic Makes a Play for the Dodgers

At this point, the question has become, who isn’t interested in buying the Dodgers? Everyone from Steve Garvey and Orel Hershiser to Larry King and Mark Cuban are in the mix.

Now, according to LA Times columnist Bill Plaschke, recently divested Lakers part-owner Magic Johnson plans to join the Frank McCourt bankruptcy sweepstakes:

Johnson would be the face of a high-powered ownership group that would include Stan Kasten, the former president of the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals, and Mark Walter, chief executive of Guggenheim Partners, a financial services firm that controls over $125 billion in assets. The firm is headquartered in Chicago and New York, with an office in Los Angeles.

LAT Columnist Says Writers Struck Out in MVP Voting

Los Angeles Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp finished second in the National League MVP race Tuesday behind Milwaukee Brewers left fielder and former Granada Hills standout Ryan Braun.

Los Angeles Times columnist Bill Plaschke called out the Baseball Writers’ Assocation of America, who decide the MLB postseason honors, for not voting Kemp over Braun, despite a disappointing 82-79 record and finishing 11.5 games behind Arizona.

Due to a LAT policy, Plaschke wasn’t able to serve as one of the two designated voters from the local BBWAA chapter. But freelancer Dodger blogger Steve Dilbeck was able to vote and decided to go with Braun:

Bill Plaschke Takes On Donald’s Sterling’s ‘Black History Month’ Ad

Finally, someone at the LA Times had the guts to stand up and say the obvious: Clippers owner Donald Sterling‘s ads in their paper are ridiculous and even offensive.

In his most recent column, Times sportswriter Bill Plaschke takes Sterling to task for his Sunday ad in the paper, which purports to celebrate Black History Month by allowing 1,000 “underprivileged” kids in to tonight’s Clippers game for free.

Writes Plaschke:

Is Donald Sterling saying that the only underprivileged children are black?

The other problem is the date of the “Black History Month” giveaway, which is March 2 against Houston. If you are going to honor that month, get the right month. For the last 35 years, Black History Month has been celebrated in February. …

Future Google Employee Ends Caltech 26-Year Losing Streak

From the headline on down (“It’s Not Rocket Science, But it’s a Win for Caltech”), veteran LA Times columnist Bill Plaschke has tremendous fun with his coverage of a truly momentous local sporting event: the first victory by Caltech’s basketball team since Ronald Reagan was President.

By sinking a free throw with 3.3 seconds left, brainiac team member Ryan Elmquist (pictured) led his team to a 46-45 victory over Occidental College, causing school president Dr. Jean-Lou Chameau and other illustrious onlookers to go crazy:

LAT Blog To Get 1 Million PVS, Does Our Work For Us

memmel_300.jpgWe have totally neglected our LAT in 90 feature this summer, but we thought we’d make amends by writing all kind of glowing things about the paper’s Olympics blog which is, truly, damn cool. (Love the on-the-ground touches and particularly like reading Bill Plaschke‘s take on the racial controversy before we’d even heard about the controversy itself.)

But — bully for us — the paper beat us to it!

In a press release extolling the paper’s Olympics coverage, the paper’s PR machine let us know it’s on track to get 1 million pvs by the games’ end.

Congrats!

LAT In 90 Seconds

39630613-04194604.jpgRFK Remembered: Joe Mozingo‘s piece about David Steiner, former campaign manager for RFK, is incredibly compelling — especially paired with Katy Newton‘s interview with Steiner, who speaks about Robert Kennedy‘s assassination for the first time publicly since the shooting 40 years ago.

30306866.jpgFive Stages of Blogger Genius: Andrw Malcolm cleverly and intelligently dissects Hillary Clinton‘s decisions in a brilliant post about five stages of political grief. Clearly, Clinton is a bit stuck in Denial.

260175.jpgGood Intentions? Bill Plaschke has a lot of interesting things to say about the Lakers. But not so interesting that we’d want to see a video of him talking, pushed up against a dingy white wall in a room with bad acoustics. C’mon guys.
