Program Director Brian Thomas Responds to CBS-FM Criticism

We reported earlier this week that a former WCBS-FM music director was critical of the differences between the Oldies station then and its Classic Hits version today.

FishbowlNY reached out to CBS-FM program director Brian Thomas for a comment on that article.

Thomas says the original headline should have been called “Different Era-Different Styles of DJs.”

“Comparing jocks of different era is like comparing Arnold Palmer to Tiger Woods,” Thomas says.

Richard Lorenzo said earlier in the week that CBS-FM lacks style today.

“The ones [jocks] then weren’t necessarily more intelligent, but they were more enjoyable because they were into the craft more deeply,” Lorenzo said.

WCBS-FM Evening DJ Ron Parker a Good Fit for Station, Listeners

Joining some big names in New York radio, WCBS-FM evening DJ Ron Parker has found his own niche with audiences.

Parker has been with CBS-FM since shortly after the station went back to Classic Hits from the jockless “Jack” format in 2007.

At the time, Parker wasn’t too familiar with listeners. But he wasn’t a complete novice either. He did some fill-in work at Z100 in 1991.

Parker, a Bronx native who also lived in New Jersey growing up, got a radio greats crash course every day.

“In those fine formidable teen years, I got a really good dose of 1010 WINS, WABC, WMCA,” Parker remembers. “Like any young kid who wanted to get in radio… [I] just listened and taped the guys.”

He’s proud to still have many airchecks of the classic DJs in his collection.

Parker reminisces about meeting Dan Ingram and “Cousin” Brucie after the jump.

Dave Packer is a ‘Fresh’ Voice at WCBS-FM

wcbs-fm.jpg

Listeners to WCBS-FM in recent weeks have a heard a new voice on the station.

Dave Packer is not new to New York. In fact, he’s not even new to CBS Radio, having worked at sister station Fresh 102.7/WWFS until last year.

Packer and morning show co-host Danni were fired in September 2009.

Now he’s resurfaced.

At the time of Packer’s ouster at “Fresh,” Brian Thomas was serving as dual program director.

Thomas remains in charge at CBS-FM, the perennially top-rated Classic Hits station.

The versatile Packer has, seemingly, gained exclusivity as the main fill-in jock at 101.1

101.1 had a plethora of veteran jocks they could bring in off the bench, including “Big Jay” Sorensen and Russ “Famous Amos” DiBello.

“We take whoever is available,” Thomas says.

He points out that another of his talented back-up announcers, Don Geronimo took a full-time position at a station in Sacramento.

“I’m in good spirits and in sync with whatever happens to me henceforth, as it is all one big, interesting movie!” DiBello tells FishbowlNY.
