It has been a busy week for Simon & Schuster. On Monday, the publishing house gave Cat Marnell $500,000 to write a book, and now it has a deal with Hillary Clinton to pen a memoir.

According to the company, Clinton’s book will focus on how she’s going to win the 2016 election. Kidding! It will focus on “sharing key decisions and experiences as Secretary of State and her ideas for how the United States can address the challenges of a dramatically changing world in the 21st century.”

“Hillary Clinton’s extraordinary public service has given her a unique perspective on recent history and the challenges we face,”  said Jonathan Karp, president and publisher of Simon & Schuster, in a statement. “This will be the ultimate book for people who are interested in world affairs and America’s place in the world today.”

The book will publish in 2014, two years before Clinton becomes president.

Cat Marnell, who quit her job at xojane.com in June of last year to do more drugs, has herself a book deal. The New York Post reports that Simon & Schuster is paying Marnell $500,000 for her memoir, titled How to Murder Your Life.

The proposal for the book — shockingly enough — included many tales of getting high and having sex. Two examples of the latter included Marnell getting “choked out by a Park Avenue millionaire kid in a pine grove by the reservoir at 4 a.m.” and “sex in vacant lots in Bushwick with white rappers.”

That sounds so rebellious and daring. You should read it if you care about sad rich kids trying to ruin their privileged lives.

Hopefully the book deal means Marnell is doing well. Maybe the memoir will even be about how glamorizing addiction is a terrible thing to do. Let us know if it is, because we’re going to pass.

You remember Cat Marnell, right? The xojane.com blogger who famously infused her writing of lipsticks and beauty balms with tales of her own drug use.

Well, Mediabistro caught up with Jane Pratt, founder of xojane and Jane and Sassy before that, to find out if she had any regrets about hiring such a controversial scribe. 

“I was definitely doing everything I could to get her into rehab, which she did do, and encouraging her to get better for herself,” Pratt said in the latest So What Do You Do? interview. ”But I don’t think that her writing about it is what made her do it. I think it’s a lot deeper than that, and writing about it was cathartic for her and helpful to other women who were going through that.”

Cat Marnell, a beauty editor for xojane.com, makes your FishbowlNY editors sad. Why? Well, according to The New York Post, Marnell is leaving her spot at xojane because she wants to concentrate on doing more drugs.

Of course ingesting stimulants is nothing new for Marnell. She often wrote about it on the site and her posts were extremely popular. But getting xojane page views by falsely glorifying addiction was not enough for Marnell. She told the Post that it was time to move on, after she couldn’t deal with a company-imposed stint in rehab:

I’m always on drugs. Look, I couldn’t spend another summer meeting deadlines behind a computer at night when I could be on the rooftop of Le Bain looking for shooting stars and smoking angel dust with my friends and writing a book, which is what I’m doing next.

We would blast Marnell for throwing away an opportunity that many writers would kill for, but there’s no point.

Hopefully one day Marnell is able to fix whatever holes she has inside with something other than drugs. That journey probably won’t be as fun as getting high and looking at the stars, but we imagine it’ll lead to better things.

Jane Pratt, ex-editor-in-chief of Sassy, the magazine bible of disaffected teenage girls for a brief stint in the 1990s, is launching a new website. The original name was JanePratt.com, which some found a tough sell, because Pratt is no longer a huge brand name in the media.

So her new website name, reports Zeke Turner at WWD, will be xoJane.com. How sweet.

WWD also runs down the list of hires at xoJane.com, which include Christina Kelly, the editor-in-chief of ELLEgirl, as an “official contributor,” Laia Garcia, who runs the blog Geometric Sleep, as lead fashion blogger, and onetime “America’s Next Top Model” judge Eric Nicholson as the site’s fashion director at large. They will join the two full-time staffers, managing editor Emily McCombs and beauty editor Cat Marnell.
