NBCLA Hosts Social Media Party

Last night at NBC Southern California headquarters in Burbank, several dozen invited bloggers gathered for an evening of food, drink and conference room presentations about the station’s Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram efforts tied to the London Summer Olympics.

Website editorial director Sara Catania, managing editor Jonathan Lloyd, social media lead Olsen Ebright and social media/tech on-air reporter Mekahlo Medina (pictured, above) took turns explaining how the “first social media Olympics” have been leveraged, cross-promoted and harnessed. One of the shiniest beacons of this systematic, station-wide effort is the fact that the follower count @NBCLA has zoomed in the past few weeks from around 27,000 just past the 40,000 mark.

Teen Duo Cranks Out NBC4 Jingles

It sounds more like a first-story-back-from-break on one of NBC4′s TV newscasts. Two kids, running amok in a TV studio, armed with a ukelele.

FishbowlLA’s favorite jingle so far is the very catchy one for anchor Robert Kovacik:

Beginning Tuesday, May 3rd, the Peacock’s three California TV stations – KNBC Los Angeles, KNTV San Francisco, and KNSD San Diego – will debut a new, separate cable channel NBC California Nonstop.

The 24-hour California cable news stream will combine re-purposed and original content for three region-specific feeds. Among the new programs is “Nonstop News LA,” a 7 p.m nightly newscast to be anchored by Colleen Williams. Per the announcement:

“Having three television stations located in different parts of the state makes it possible for us to create the first channel dedicated to capturing the true essence of life in California,” said NBC4 LA vice president of news and content Vickie Burns. “California Nonstop will allow viewers to keep up with what’s happening in the state on both a local and regional level.”

NBC4 Censors Joke About Super Collider Thinking That Meant a Train

Gawker has the exclusive video on this. Basically, Conan O’Brien was doing a bit about ‘smashing things together at high speeds’. He mentions the Super Collider. Then goes into a bit about smashing celebrity douche bags together. Suddenly anchor Colleen Williams comes on the screen, says it’s not appropriate for them to show that bit because of the recent fatal train accident and because they are the new arbiters of sensitivity for Conan’s mostly unemployed or insomniac audience they go into news about the market, ahem, crashing.

Good job.
