David Letterman: Late Night’s Version of a Super-Charged Volvo Station Wagon

DavidLettermanComediansinCarsIf you never saw the Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee episode featuring David Letterman, now is the time to cue it up. There will be many tributes, even more articles and a few showcase interviews before Dave finally hangs it up in 2015. But for our money, all of these artifacts will have a hard time matching the entertainment value of the Crackle series.

Part of the reason the Letterman episode is so memorable is that host Jerry Seinfeld, for one of the very few series times, drives not one of his own car-collection vehicles but rather two sets of wheels belonging to the guest. And what a car the marquee vehicle is – a Volvo 960 station wagon, stealth-souped with a race car engine for Dave by late, great pal Paul Newman.

The other principal reason this Coffee klatch is worth watching now is that it is a career retrospective, but without any of the forthcoming pomp and circumstance that will no doubt drive Letterman crazy. During the conversation with Jerry, Dave slips in a sly little Jay Leno dig (“Get a little something for yourself…”), breaks down one of his all-time great ad lib moments (“Have you ever had the hump of a camel?…”) and remembers the challenges of opening in Denver for Leslie Uggams.

Up Next for Jerry Seinfeld: Tina Fey

We are longtime, early fans of Jerry Seinfeld‘s Crackle Web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. And so, it was with bittersweet disappointment that we greeted the recent half-season relaunch featuring Louis CK.

Seinfeld trolley-ed down to an NYC dock with the incomparable everyman comic and took a ride in CK’s Jaws-like boat. It’s not that the episode was terrible or anything; it was just surprisingly flat – like the Manhattan surrounding waters on filming day – and surprisingly light in terms of laugh-out-loud moments.

Acura Sponsors a Show About Other Cars

A perfect Jerry Seinfeld premise, don’t you think?

AcuraNSXPer a recent interview piece by LA-based Bloomberg reporters Alan Ohnsman and Andy Fixmer, the second season of the comedian’s Crackle Web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee has a single sponsor – Acura. Although one episode featuring Sarah Silverman includes some product-placement conversation, Honda/Acura is basically paying for the privilege of wrapping online ads and a “Presented by” banner around Seinfeld rhapsodizing about other brands:

“From a traditional viewpoint, a lot of car companies or marketers would have dismissed this opportunity because he has other cars in it,” said Honda senior vice president Mike Accavitti. “I appreciate the old Porsche that he wants to show or the big Rolls-Royce that he wants to go pick up someone up in, the old Beetle he uses to get Larry David.”
