CBS Foolishly Blows Drew Carey, Craig Ferguson Cover

Even the most inept April Fool’s prankster knows that broadcasting your plans weeks ahead of the big day is a sure-fire way to dilute the Tom-foolery.


So then… Why would CBS package a video teaser and blast out a March 18 press release that takes 95% of the Showcase surprise out of next week’s daytime/late night swap? Maybe they feared that their older-skewing median viewers would teeter into health-risk territory without proper warning that Craig Ferguson‘s Tuesday, April 1 hosting of The Price is Right is not a permanent new deal. From the release:

Ferguson will be just the fourth person ever to host the game show for the network (in addition to Drew Carey, Bob Barker and Dennis James). Ferguson’s robot skeleton sidekick, Geoff Peterson, and pantomime horse, Secretariat, will join him as the gorgeous models.

After Witnessing Layoffs and Cutbacks Firsthand — And Surviving — Are Newspaper Journalists Better Prepared To Cover Economic Woes?

schultz.pngConnie Schultz, a columnist at the Cleveland Plain Dealer, used her column in this Sunday’s paper to respond to a comment made by digital media maven Tina Brown to the Chicago Tribune last week while finding some sort of silver lining to the apparent death of newspapers.

Yes, Schultz conceded, veteran journalists are worried about job security. But they also fear “the online threat to standards we hold dear,” she said. Brown, who said journalists in their 50′s are afraid of the moves the industry is making towards digital media, was “too flip in assessing what worries many journalists,” Schultz added.

Schultz argued that, contrary to what Brown and others think, blogs are not the future of the media. “The so-called citizen journalism of most blogs is an affront to those of us who believe reporting and attribution must precede publication.”

Nieman Speaker to Writers: ‘The Business Model Is Broken — You Are Not Broken’


Despite widespread industry layoffs and the closures plaguing many media outlets, 575 journalists, writers and students gathered in Boston over the weekend for Harvard University’s annual Nieman Conference on Narrative Journalism.

Numbers were down — last year the event attracted 850 attendees, meaning this year’s number of attendees was down by a third — but while the conference addressed the uncertain future of the media, speakers strove to stay upbeat. Art Buchwald — Taking Control of The Story Until the Bitter End

buchwaldart.jpgA few publications seized on the New York Times’ unique (and damn cool) approach to the obit: The Do-It-Yourself video obit.

From Editor and Publisher: “It occurred to me that we ought to revive the tradition here of interviewing people whose deaths are likely to be Page One news for their obituaries,” (Tim) Weiner said. “And do it in high definition video.”

Others picked up on the fact that Buchwald wrote his obit in book-form, too. Also from E&P:

Buchwald’s final book — Too Soon to Say Goodbye (Random House, November 2006) — was something Connie Schultz turned to immediately when she heard this morning about the political humorist’s death. The Plain Dealer of Cleveland columnist said one reason she found the book inspiring was that it showed that dedicated writers, no matter how ill, “keep writing as long as they have their wits about them.”

Schultz added: “He could be so funny, even about the fact he was dying. But I never doubted for a moment how difficult a time it was for him. He knew his time was looming.”
