KTLA Hires Courtney Friel, Jillian Barberie

It’s not every day that a TV news director can cram five new hires into a single tweet. But that was the case Monday with KTLA’s Jason Ball:

The two biggest names are of course the KTTV FOX 11 tandem of Courtney Friel and Jillian Barberie. When we spoke to Friel a couple of months ago, she said her priority was to spend some quiet time at home with husband Carter Evans. Apparently, either the novelty of that wore off or the KTLA offer was just too good to pass up.

Courtney Friel Says Goodbye to KTTV

As entertainment reporter Courtney Friel bids farewell today to FOX 11 after six years with the station and sister network, she says her first priority will be some quiet time this weekend at home with husband Carter Evans. Her CBS News spouse is now also infamously known as the journalist who got caught in some very intense and scary Big Bear/Christopher Dorner crossfire.

“I knew when I was moving out to Los Angeles that it was always the plan for me to just finish out the last year of my FNC contract at KTTV,” she tells FishbowlLA via email. “My husband and I really wanted to move back to LA to raise our family, and Roger Ailes was so gracious to allow this to happen.”

“It’s been such an honor to work with KTTV and FOX News Channel for the past six years and I really appreciate all the love, support, and guidance I received,” she adds. “I have a few projects I’ll be working on and look forward to exploring more entertainment opportunities both within television news and other alternative entertainment programming platforms.”

‘NY’s Funniest Reporter’ Contest Slated for August

Calling aspiring comedians: this year’s “New York’s Funniest Reporter” contest has been scheduled for August 19.

The competition, now in its seventh year, calls on New York reporters to do five minutes of stand-up comedy at the Comic Strip Live Comedy Club on the Upper East Side. All the contestants will be assigned a professional comedy “mentor” to help them prepare.

Last years’ competitors included WPIX’s Greg Mocker, HLN’s Jane Velez-Mitchell, FNC’s Courtney Friel and FBN’s Adam Shapiro. HLN producer Marlaina Schiavo was the 2011 winner.

WPIX’s Greg Mocker Among Those Looking to be Named New York’s Funniest Reporter

To paraphrase Joe Pesci from Goodfellas, “How are they so funny?”

Greg Mocker, is the WPIX/Channel 11 reporter, most associated with his MTA run-ins. But can the high-energy Channel 11 street reporter tell a funny story?

We’ll find out this weekend, as Mocker and several others vie for the title of New York ’s Funniest Reporter.

The 6th Annual New York’s Funniest Reporter Show takes place on Saturday at 5:30 pm at Comic Strip Live (1568 Second Avenue) . Each of the seven media professionals will do five minutes of stand up comedy. Mocker and News 12 Long Island anchor Lauren Sivan are the only local reporters. Sivan, though, the 2010 champ will participate, but can not win.

Soft in the Head, Soft Tissues, Soft Money: Gossip Goodies

Britney Spears checks into rehab and has a great story for the baldie thing–head lice. (But they’re everywhere–she really can’t escape.)

Anna Nicole Smith’s body is decomposing too fast for a public viewing. Strange, we thought drugs preserved soft tissues.

Barack Obama raised over 1 million bucks in Hollywood. David Geffen reportedly calls Bill Clinton “reckless” and Hillary Clinton’s camp calls for his head.

Willow Bay, trophy wife, model and news anchor, is on the short list to head USC’s Annenberg School of Communications. Courtney Friel already has a job.

FOX News Hires Blonde As “Journalist”

Courtney_Friel_02.jpg

Our brother-blog, TVNewser, has gone horn-dog post-wild over FNC’s new hire, Courtney Friel. She’s introduced as a journalist, which we think is super-cute. Hosting the World Poker Tour is way more fun than doing all that boring news stuff!

And here’s her big tip for all you budding journos out there:

buy the photographers beer to entice them to shoot your standups and edit packages .I ended up with a fabulous resume tape!

Or rather, a reel shot by drunks, who would comprise her fan base. She also tells Maxim readers that “girls should use their looks.”

Her interests include Fun, Sun, Beach and learning to spell.
