Downtown Mugging Thrusts LA Times Editor Into Challenging New Realm

This certainly ranks as one of the more unusual and jarring LA Times juxtapositions.

The same weekend (January 19-20) that Community News editor Dan Evans was viciously robbed in LA’s downtown arts district, his newspaper colleague Roger Vincent had an article in the Sunday edition about the transitioning nature of that very same neighborhood. Here’s how architect Scott Johnson, who previously lived in New York’s similarly made-over meatpacking district during the 1970s, framed the arts district:

“There are very rough patches,” said Johnson, who lives in a condominium on Industrial Street. “It’s muscular. It’s complicated. It’s interesting…” He calls it [the roughness] “authenticity” in a time when “we’re getting bombarded with fake stuff.”

Evans wrote frankly and openly over the weekend about the details of the violent incident and how the altercation has shaken his world. In a neighborhood that he and wife Donna, a Patch local editor, only just recently moved to.

Burbank Needs Some Wikileaks

Here’s a thing: when you see pitchforks and torches on the horizon just let the incensed villagers know what they want to know. The city of Burbank disclosed that in the wake of budget shortfalls and the overuse of the phrase “tightening our belt” – city employees got a million dollars in bonuses last year. Who? Why? They won’t say. Enter Dan Evans columnist at the Burbank Leader and his new nemesis Juli Scott, the chief assistant city attorney.

Evans writes:

We told Scott that if her refusal constituted the city’s final position, the paper would be forced to file suit to obtain the records. And, if we win, the city will owe us our legal fees.

This, in turn, prompted Scott to reply that she would need to take up the issue with the City Council in closed session, given that we had just threatened legal action. The council, by the way, won’t meet until next year.

All of this is laughable. The city of Burbank is actually going to hold a closed session on whether to release public information?

Husband, Wife Now Run Competing La Cañada Publications

Former Los Angeles Daily News crime reporter Donna Evans (pictured) has a new job. She’s one of the very latest local hires for Patch.com, heading up their La Cañada Flintridge hub.

But there’s a weird little catch, a first we think for the Patch empire, which incidentally just passed the 500 websites mark nationwide. She’s married to Dan Evans, editor of overlapping weekly newspaper La Cañada Valley Sun, part of the LA Times family of regional newspapers. (Evans, formerly with The Hollywood Reporter, also oversees regional titles in Glendale, Burbank and La Crescenta.)

Muses the Missus:

Oh yeah, my husband. Funny story there: he’s technically my competition… What sort of grist for this column might Dan’s and my competitive natures produce? Stay tuned!

Beat Reporter’s State Refund Check Bounces

pogo.jpg We don’t mean to sound alarmist but we are DOOMED.

First an antagonist in disaster movies is our governor. He gets easily thwarted by bureaucracy, “girlie men” and special election voters. Then there are IOUs issued instead of actual money. Then the state catches on fire. Now? Now a city hall reporter at The Glendale News-Press Melanie Hicken, tries to cash her $29 tax refund check from the state of California and it bounces.

Her whole account is here at Jewel City Juice.

That’s it. We’re screwed. This whole migrating west thing is a failed social experiment. Run for the hills! East! Go east!

Thanks to Dan Evans for sending us this.
