Lorne Michaels Engineers Another Inspired Succession

ShutterstockDarrellHammondHarlem2012The choice of Jimmy Fallon to take over for Jay Leno will rank as one of the best decisions comedy impresario Lorne Michaels has ever made. As if that weren’t enough for the current calendar year, there is now news of an equally inspired move in the SNL announcer department.

Taking over in this 40th season of SNL for the late Don Pardo will be Darrell Hammond. From Andrea Romano‘s Mashable item:

Hammond, who was a cast member from 1995 to 2009, also occasionally sat in for Pardo when he was sick.

“I sat in for Don when he had laryngitis several times over the years,” Hammond told USA Today. “When he passed, they wanted me; it felt right for me to be the one to replace him.”

Live Talks Los Angeles Celebrates Its Third Anniversary

Tomorrow night’s Live Talks Los Angeles event featuring Burt Bacharach in conversation with Mitch Albom is notable for a couple of additional reasons. It will mark the three-year anniversary of the popular local series and is the first of several Live Talks events planned for Glendale’s Alex Theatre.

It all began May 14, 2010 with author Jane Smiley interviewing Dave Barry. Since then, series founder-producer Ted Habte-Gabr has staged more than 100 events, bringing together everyone from Steve Martin and Tina Fey to Fred Willard and Darrell Hammond to Sharon Waxman and Sir Michael Caine. In addition to the evening series, which focuses for the most part on arts and culture, Habte-Gabr curates a downtown daytime business-themed bracket, Live Talks Business.

“We have three events booked at the Alex,” Habte-Gabr tells FishbowlLA via telephone. “The first one is Burt Bacharach; the second one is Phil Jackson in conversation with John Salley on June 12; and the third one is Neil Gaiman in conversation with Geoff Boucher, June 27. Then the Alex shuts down for some major renovations and they open back up in November, at which point we’ll probably have one or two more events there before the end of the year.”

Larry David Recalls the Day Mom Crushed His Journalistic Aspirations

Per a hilarious teaser clip for Current TV’s Friday evening broadcast premiere of Joy Behar’s Comics with Benefits, a Hurricane Sandy fundraiser held on Monday at the 92nd Street YMCA in New York City, Larry David‘s mom did more than curb her enthusiasm when the comedian expressed his young-age professional aspirations.

David recalled on stage with Behar how his journalistic aspirations were ridiculed by his no-nonsense mom. “I said, ‘Ma, I think I want to be a sports announcer when I grow up,’” David remembered. “She said, ‘What makes you think you… you?…. you!!! You’re going to be a sports announcer? Are you kidding? You’re not special.’”

Had mom not been so harsh, David probably would have wound up more on the color commentary side than play-by-play. In a perfect world, he would have found his way to the sad sack New York Mets.

Anthrax Scare | Gender Bending | Trump Card

  • TVSpy: An anthrax scare caused WPIX to lock down the newsroom Thursday and make some minor programming changes.
  • FishbowlLA: Piers Morgan (left) pays respect to comedian Patrice O’Neal, who died earlier this week. Morgan, though, had a gender mishap, referring to O’Neal as “she.”
  • TVNewser: Donald Trump, who decided against a run for the Republican nomination for president, has another idea–moderate a Republican debate on Ion TV. While this seems like the perfect SNL skit, we believe Darrell Hammond has not committed to the engagement.
