Veteran Air Personality Dave Stewart Joins WCBS-FM

Longtime WPLJ overnight jock Dave Stewart is now keeping listeners up all night on WCBS-FM. In a radio industry where pre-dawn voicetracking is the norm, particularly on music stations, Stewart is delighted to be live each weeknight on the Classic Hits mainstay.

“CBS-FM is my dream station, so I can’t even express how honored I am to work under that logo,” Stewart tells FishbowlNY.

It’s a change for CBS-FM where Joe Causi was on “tape” during overnight. When Causi was promoted to evenings, music director Lenny Bloch handled the voicetracking duties.

“The people at CBS/New York have welcomed me like family,” Stewart says. “I will do my best to uphold the legacy.”

Stewart debuted on CBS-FM Friday morning.

After 22 years at his station, Stewart left WPLJ in October 2011, as part of layoffs at the Cumulus New York cluster.

Veteran Overnighter Dave Stewart Leaves WPLJ on ‘Great Terms’

WPLJ overnight jock Dave Stewart has crossed a generation of fans, starting at the station in 1989. He found his “voice” two years later as the pre-dawn DJ.

As we reported Friday, Stewart was among more than a dozen staffers laid off at WPLJ and WABC-AM.

Stewart says it was harder for program director Scott Shannon and general manager Steve Borneman to part ways with their longtime air personality.

“Steve was heartbroken,” Stewart tells FishbowlNY. “It was harder on them than it was on me.”

His transition from swing announcer to the overnight happened around the same time as Shannon’s debut at WPLJ.

“[Scott] liked somebody with production skills, which I had, for the morning show to help out with them,” Stewart recalls. “We just all kind of clicked.”

WABC and WPLJ Layoffs, Veteran Air Personality Dave Stewart Among Casualties

Last month, Cumulus officially completed its acquisition of Citadel Broadcasting. That led to the other shoe dropping yesterday with several layoffs at New York’s Cumulus stations 77 WABC and WPLJ.

All Access reports that as many as 15 staffers combined from the two stations were let go Friday.

Among the notables, WPLJ longtime overnight DJ Dave Stewart, who not only ends an era at WPLJ (22 years), but he was one of the last remaining live overnight jocks in New York.

Stewart will now concentrate on his syndicated show Retrostars.

FishbowlNY attempted to reach Stewart for a comment.

WPLJ evening DJ Christine Richie was another air personality shown the door, along with general sales manager Helen Hammel.

Over at WABC, Sunday host Mancow Muller did not survive the cuts, although he still has a weekday job as morning host on the Chicago-based Talk Radio Network. Muller was hired by WABC program director Laurie Cantillo in September 2010.

All Access says former Sean Hannity producer Jill Vitale was also laid off on the WABC side.
