SIRIUS XM CEO Heralds ‘Exciting New Milestone’

The satellite radio service is all over the news wire this morning with coverage from David Lieberman (Deadline), Georg Szalai (The Hollywood Reporter), James Rogers (TheStreet.com) and others. The reason: a press release announcement by CEO Jim Meyer that SIRIUS has crossed the magical mark of 25 million subscribers.

What’s most interesting about all this, besides the morning stock bump if you’re a SIRIUS XM stakeholder, is the main source of the larger-than-expected Q2 2013 subscriber increase. From Lieberman’s report:

Most of SiriusXM’s new customers are auto buyers, and the company attributes much of its recent growth to the continued strength in that market. Sales in June were up 11.2% vs the same month last year, to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 15.98M, Automotive News reported.

Deadline Snags Washington Post TV Critic Lisa de Moraes

The farewell party started May 31 in the form of Lisa de Moraes‘ final live chat at washingtonpost.com. Today, her next journalism home has been officially heralded by Nikki Finke and Deadline TV editor Nellie Andreeva. She will be the site’s TV columnist:

“Lisa is one of the most respected and colorful voices in television coverage today,” said Andreeva. “I’ve enjoyed her work as a fan for years, now I’m happy to have her as a colleague at Deadline.”

Added Finke: “I can’t remember when I didn’t read Lisa. Her columns cover everything from morning shows to reality programs to executive suites with exclusive news and irreverence. I’m thrilled she decided to make Deadline her Hollywood home.”

Deadline’s Mike Fleming Mourns the Loss of His Father to Hurricane Sandy

Sometimes, there are no words. But today, after a two-week absence from the Deadline.com beat, Mike Fleming bridges that gap beautifully with his post about the death of his father as a result of Hurricane Sandy.

Fleming begins by thanking PMC CEO Jay Penske and Deadline colleague David Lieberman for making their way through the mayhem to express their condolences in person. This after the journalist’s 80-year-old dad was felled in Long Island during the storm in the most freakish, unlucky manner imaginable.

Fleming’s eulogy is a must-read, a heartfelt all-inclusive from a man usually concerned with doling out exclusives. At the very end of the post, Fleming offers this sage advice:

Many who wrote asked if there was anything they could do. There is something. If you are lucky enough to still have parents alive, or siblings or other relatives you’ve lost touch with, please make time to call them. See them if you can. Life is so fragile, and at times like this you realize that family, friends and faith are the only permanent things. And I learned I have those in abundance, and in places I had not anticipated.

RIP.

Will Monday Night’s Deadline/Soho House Bash Include a Big Announcement?*

A cryptic Deadline advisory posted Saturday morning by Nikki Finke has some Hollywood trade watchers speculating that the PMC-Variety deal is done. The 11:34 a.m. PDT September 29 message reads:

The Deadline Team won’t provide 24/7 news coverage for at least the next week. One of the reasons is DH business affecting the entire staff in LA, NY and Europe. As a result, we’ll probably miss some breaking stories and delay monitoring some comments, emails and phone calls. Please cut us some slack for the duration.

Which begs the question – will Jay Penske be making a “big” announcement at Soho House in West Hollywood tomorrow night? That’s when the “PMC” in Penske Media Corp. will briefly overlap with “private members’ club,” as Deadline hosts a “Kick Off the Awards Season” party there from 6 to 9 p.m. A who’s who of studio execs, film publicists and awards season PR consultants will hobnob with not just Penske but many other PMC/Deadline folks: film editor Mike Fleming, tv editor Nellie Andreeva, awards columnist Pete Hammond, marketing consultant Madelyn Hammond, executive editor David Lieberman, reporter Dominic Patten, PMC senior vp Nic Paul, PMC senior sales director Cathy Goepfert, Awards/Line managing editor Anthony D’Alessandro and Awards/Line editor Christy Grosz.*

Hollywood Trades React to Marissa Mayer Yahoo Appointment

Among the quartet of Hollywood “trades,” none had been keeping a closer eye on the Yahoo! CEO sweepstakes than TheWrap. Sharon Waxman wrote several articles about this topic, working her extensive showbiz contacts. But she and media reporter Lucas Shaw today were as surprised as everyone else by the appointment to the post of Google VP Marissa Mayer:

Choosing Mayer over Levinsohn appears like another win for technology over media at one of Silicon Valley’s biggest companies… She holds a master’s degree in computer science from Stanford – a real one – as well as a bachelor’s degree in symbolic systems.

Deadline.com Adds New York Based Executive Editor

After nearly two decades chronicling the digital media revolution for USA Today, David Lieberman has decided to jump to one of its newest purveyors. Beginning April 11th, the veteran business reporter will join Deadline.com as New York based executive editor.

Lieberman, who has also worked for Business Week, TV Guide, the Hartford Courant, and Hartford Advocate, will cover the business side of media for Nikki Finke. He will also continue his work as an adjunct professor at the Fordham University Graduate School of Business. Per the press release:

Said Finke: “I’ve long admired David’s journalism at USA Today, not just because he’s so knowledgeable and well-sourced and accurate, but also because he can explain very complex issues in an engaging and readable way. Ever since I first invited him to breakfast 15 years ago in NYC and we quickly became bicoastal friends, I’ve had this premonition that we’d work together at some point.”
