Little Girl Killed in Tucson Shooting was ‘A Member of the Dodgers Family’

Christina Taylor Green, the 9-year-old murdered during the Tucson shooting on Saturday, is the daughter of John Green, East Coast supervisor of amateur scouts for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Frank McCourt released a statement on Saturday after news of Christina’s death broke:

We lost a member of the Dodgers family today. The entire Dodgers organization is mourning the death of John’s daughter Christina, and will do everything we can to support John, his wife Roxana and their son Dallas in the aftermath of this senseless tragedy. I spoke with John earlier today and expressed condolences on behalf of the entire Dodgers organization.

Baseball is a longstanding tradition for the third grader’s family. Her grandfather is Dallas Green, former manager of the Phillies, the Yankees and the Mets. Christina herself was a second baseman, and the only girl, on her Little League team. According to her father, she wanted to be the first woman to play major league baseball.

Rumor Mill — Stuff We’ve Heard About People You Know

whisper.jpg

FBLA has decided that responsible, cautious journalism is for wusses. We get delicious little morsels of unsubstantiated rumors in our in box all the time. Today, we shall disperse them to the masses. Feast, ye heathens! Feast!

Last week we heard that the 50-80 LAT staffers were going to be laid off by week’s end. Instead, staffers received their raises (we’d also heard those were going to be frozen).

That hasn’t stopped the doomsday whispers, with Spring Street journos convinced that at least 50 jobs will be eliminated soon. FBLA hears management is targeting reporters and editors who received below average performance reviews.

Here’s another interesting tid-bit that more conscientious journalists would check out before publishing: In their ongoing investigation into Andre Martinez’s Op/Ed pages, LAT brass is looking into whether Martinez’s relationship with Kelly Mullens influenced his coverage of the Dodgers — one of Mullens’ former clients.

Know anything more about any of this — or anything else? Fill out that there tip box to the right, and let us know!

Doncha wish your writer was snark like me?
Paul Brownfield, of all people, takes a look at ANTM and the Pussycat Dolls. As this is the 8th season of Top Model, you’d think he’d figured out how it works.

Smokin’ in the boy’s room.
Teens who watch R-rated movies and/or have tvs in their bedrooms are more likely to smoke. Because they’re less likely to have a parental unit paying attention to what they do? Nope–they’re influenced by those smokin’ movie stars.

Joel Stein hates babies.
Joel Stein doesn’t want to see those emailed baby pictures. He’s really scraping the bottom of the “who can I offend next” barrel. He’s not one of the redacted columnists, in case you were wondering.

That’s baseball!
It’s he-said, he-said over at the Dodgers. Outfielder J.D. Drew says he left the team because he needed job security, and the team says that he never asked for a complete no-trade cause. So, he went to Boston, where he got an extra 2 years on his contract–and an extra $37 mil. But it’s not about money.

Latino Power!
La Cucaracha is back in the paper. And even better, Heathcliff is gone.
