San Francisco, We’ve Got You Covered

baynewser_100x100.gifOur Fishbowl blogs have New York, DC and LA covered, but until now we have neglected that important city by the bay. But, never fear San Francisco, BayNewser joined our blog family today with bloggers E.B. Boyd and Jason Turbow promising to cover “all things media in the Bay Area.”

They’ve already gotten off to a good start with coverage about the massive layoffs at the San Francisco Chronicle, an interview with the creator of CNN’s breaking news feed and coverage of the What Comes After Newspapers? panel.

Welcome to the fold, BayNewser! We can’t wait to follow your coverage about your hometown media giants, Google and Twitter, and we’re sure to get some Facebook updates, too. Looks like you’re going to be busy.

BayNewser Coming Soon!…Next Week Actually

baynewser_100x100.gifWe’re getting a new sister blog. The second one on the West Coast – a sister blog to wake up just as late as we do and tell those snobby East Coast sibling blogs where to stick it. Aw. How fun.

BayNewser will be the newest Fishbowl type of site covering media news and gossip in the San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley.

The editors are:

  • E.B. Boyd, who has been a contributing writer to mediabistro.com for several years, and who has a television and print news media background (CNN, Toledo Blade). Most recently E.B. has been working for Silicon Valley software and Internet companies in product design. Check out FishbowlLA for E.B.’s coverage of a media conference in SF last Friday.

  • Jason Turbow, an admitted “news junkie” who grew up in the Bay Area, and who spent five years at San Francisco Chronicle. Jason has also worked for online media outlets including NBCi and Bay Insider. His first book, a non-fiction, baseball-themed title, is set for publication next year.
  • The site is officially launching on Monday. We’ll keep you update here.

Entire press release after the break.

What Keeps William Langewiesche On The Ellie Shortlist?

lang_072407.jpgFor all you writers looking for a near surefire way to make the list of finalists for next year’s National Magazine Awards, here’s a tip: Try spelling your name, W-I-L-L-I-A-M L-A-N-G-E-W-I-E-S-C-H-E.

For the 10th straight year in a row, the former Atlantic scribe and current Vanity Fair international correspondent has been nominated for a coveted Ellie — this time in the Reporting category for his “City of Fear” piece on how a Brazilian prison gang took control of Sao Paulo. Those of you keeping score at home will know that William Langewiesche has been nominated a total of 11 times in the 18 years he’s been writing for the big boys. And unlike Susan Lucci (remember her 18 years of watching fellow Daytime Emmy acting nominees prance up to the podium?), Langewiesche has actually nabbed the prized honor — twice.

So how does he do it? We cozied up to some of our favorite magazine cognoscenti to get their take on the Langewiesche magic…
