Gavin Newsom Announces His Campaign for Governor on Twitter

LA Papers Weigh In on Mayor V’s Gubernatorial Chances

Daniel Heimpel‘s beat has been Measure B. He explains the implications of its failing for Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa:

Villaraigosa is considering a run for governor in 2010, and, as L.A. Weekly has previously reported, he has spent much of his time as mayor focused on appearances at photo ops and other press-oriented events. Statewide polls have shown him trailing Attorney General Jerry Brown and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom in a mock gubernatorial election, and Villaraigosa still suffers high negatives following an affair that ruined his marriage.

His re-election on March 3 was supposed to create a political boost for him. His huge campaign war chest frightened off any big-name rivals for mayor, leaving him a largely clear field for a re-election romp. As the Weekly learned last month, solar Measure B was rushed onto the March 3 ballot to burnish Villaraigosa’s image with voters around California.

David Zahniser and Phil Willon write in the LAT:

The election was a mixed bag for the mayor in other ways. His ally, City Councilman Jack Weiss, was forced into a runoff in the race for city attorney. His push for the solar energy plan known as Measure B stumbled despite a flood of 30-second television commercials that featured the mayor as the sole salesman. And Measure E, a plan to give taxpayer subsidies to businesses, was defeated despite support from Villaraigosa and Police Chief William J. Bratton.

We think it’s funny that Mayor V nearly lost to gadflies because that’s what he is to the Obama Administration.

Meg Whitman Announces Bid for Governator Position

The presidential election cycle is over (for a couple of months anyway) and heating up is the California gubernatorial election.

And we welcome any reason to talk about or look at Gavin Newsom. For any reason. Just so that’s clear.

The latest news is Former EBay Chief Executive Meg Whitman announced her bid for the Republican nomination.

An exec that has made money out of worthless crap instead of the other way around? There’s the campaign slogan.

FBLA Exclusive Interview with David Cohn

Spot.us founder David Cohn sat down with us for a little Q & A.

FBLA: How has the reception been to this idea so far? Has there been a lot of money raised?

DC: The reception has been good. People are genuinely excited about it. If I had a $5 donation for every person that said it was a smart idea, we would have funded all our pitches by now ;)

But seriously: So far people are really positive about it. We haven’t raised “a lot” of money by some standards, so far we’ve raised about $1,000 – but that’s not bad in just one week. The problem is that we must raise a lot more if we are going to fund some serious journalism.

Gavin Newsom Says No to 8…and That’s About All He’s Said No To

We’re going to go out on a limb and say we think San Francisco’s Mayor Gavin Newsom might be planning to run for something. Yeah, it was the exploratory committee that tipped us off…that and this video.

We think Newsom and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa can have a slut off to see who gets to be governor. That’s how Arnold Schwarzenegger got in wasn’t it?
