Slate Columnist Squares Off Against Halloween Meanie

ShutterstockHalloweenHouseWe’re not sure if Emily Yoffe, a.k.a. Dear Prudence, wrote the headline for her latest Slate advice column. But the top of this one leaves little to the imagination as far as where she stands on the opening missive: “Monster.”

The individual being referred to here is a resident of one of America’s richer neighborhoods, who wrote in to complain that kids from poorer areas invade their trick-or-treat stoop each Halloween. Replying to the reader, Yoffe comes as close as an advice columnist can to losing her cool:

Your whine makes me kind of wish that people from the actual poor side of town come this year not with scary costumes but with real pitchforks. Stop being callous and miserly and go to Costco, you cheapskate, and get enough candy to fill the bags of the kids who come one day a year to marvel at how the one percent live.

There’s an Ira Glass Halloween Kids Costume

Much is being made today about Ira Glass’s deconstruction on last night’s Tonight Show of some recent Twitter Bard-bashing.

And while that was certainly a great deal of fun to listen to, the part of the interview that is most firmly lodged in the FishbowlNY noggin’ is the kids Halloween outfit highlighted and endorsed by Jimmy. The suit, tie, glasses, portable radio and gray hairspray package is designed to allow ten-year-olds and such to trick or treat as the This American Life host.

On this Hallow’s Eve, the Journal & Courier in Lafayette, Indiana wins U.S. honors by a spooky mile. In connection with some local communities deciding to postpone trick or treating because of impending bad weather, they went with the Cloud Monster.
