The Fonz Headlines Hollywood 3.0

This weekend, the LA Times Festival of Books is being succeeded on the USC campus by a not-altogether-different group of panelists. And once again, the best part is that it’s free.

Taking place all day today in the Annenberg East Lobby and Annenberg Auditorium is USC journalism school-sponsored event Hollywood 3.0. The proceedings will culminate at 7 p.m. with a very cool familial chat. From the Daily Trojan write-up:

Two of the prominent headliners are the father-son duo of Henry and Max Winkler.  [Graduate student and event team lead TimMcHugh promises that their panel will not only be inspiring, but also one everyone can gain something from.

“Anyone can have fun with the Winklers,” states McHugh. “Henry Winkler played the popular character Fonzie back on Happy Days and his son Max is a writer, director, producer in his own right in filmmaking. It’s kind of a generational panel… the Winkler event will be in the Annenberg lobby, to create more of a sit-down vibe to it. It’s also about what it’s like working in front and behind the camera and needing to diversify skill sets especially in today’s modern Hollywood.”

Emerson College Breaks Ground on Satellite Facility

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Thursday for the new $85 million Emerson College satellite facility in Los Angeles.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, councilman Eric Garcetti, Emerson College president Lee Pelton, Emerson alum Henry Winkler, and architect Thom Mayne were on hand. The 10-story building is expected to be completed in 2014.

“Today, we celebrate the first steps toward what will be an ambitious new endeavor that will further benefit our students, the fields we serve and the city of Los Angeles itself,” Pelton told the audience, per The Boston Globe. “In doing so, we extend Emerson’s distinctive curricular footprint across the entire continent, from the shores of one ocean to the shores of another.”

Emerson College Los Angeles Gets the Green Light

Big news today out of Boston for west coast Emerson College grads. Their Alma Mater will soon be a whole lot closer.

An LA campus has been touted for several years, with a vacant lot at Sunset Blvd. and Gordon Street calling out the college’s name. Today, via e-mail, institution president Lee Pelton revealed that the school’s board of trustees voted last month to approve construction of the new campus. Per Lauren Landry‘s report on BostInnovation.com:

“The ECLA center will enrich academic programming and opportunities for undergraduates, graduate and professional studies students, as well as create spaces that integrate living and learning,” Pelton wrote. “It represents a bold, visual statement of Emerson’s presence in Los Angeles, which includes several thousand alumni/ae active in the media and entertainment industries, many of them well known.”

Sharon Waxman Enjoys a Hotel du Cap Nightcap

Over the weekend, The Wrap’s doyenne Sharon Waxman filed a freewheeling dispatch from the lobby of the Hotel du Cap, that outrageously expensive enclave where stars retreat after doing their business at the nearby Cannes Film Festival.

It was a sea of Hollywood–Johnny Depp, Jerry Bruckheimer, Graham King, UTA agents–as well as east coast potentates such as Harvey Weinstein and “the two-fisted punch of Hollywood gossip” (columnist Roger Friedman, New York publicist Peggy Siegal). But the funniest bit involved Henry Winkler‘s son Max and director Spike Jonze:

Winkler tells Jonze that he is often mistaken for him. In fact, he recounts an amazing story in which he met Dustin Hoffman and talked movie projects with him for 45 minutes. The entire time Hoffman thought he was talking to Jonze. Oh well.

Henry Winkler Reels In Memorable Fly Fishing Book

Not very many books are released on a Sunday. But that’s the case with I’ve Never Met an Idiot on the River: Reflections on Family, Photography, and Fly Fishing by Henry Winkler, arriving from Insight Editions May 1st.

FishbowlLA got its hands on an advance copy, and our favorite aspect of the 143-page tome – by far – is the way it showcases a celeb’s personal moments in a way that has nothing to do with TMZ, Radar Online, or Perez Hilton doodles. There’s a gracious dedication to attorney Skip Brittenham and late talent agent Leonard Hanzer, a lovely preface by Winkler’s wife Stacey, and this reminder of the old adage it’s who those you know, know:

While sitting at the luncheon table at our oldest son’s wedding, I showed a few photographs I had taken over the years in Montana to Cristina and Tony Thomopolous. They introduced the idea of a book and then introduced me to [literary agent] Jan Miller.
