Chelsea Handler to Host Talk Show on Netflix (LostRemote)
Late-night comedian Chelsea Handler is moving from TV to Netflix, announcing Thursday she’ll host a talk show on the streaming service in 2016. NYT The idea could appear counterintuitive because Netflix, the subscription streaming video service, has thus far only posted original series in their entirety, not day by day or even week by week. But this apparent incongruity may be what appealed to Handler, a comic who has been public about seeking a new and different landing place after declaring that she was planning to leave E!, where for seven years she has hosted Chelsea Lately, a daily late-night show. WSJ Netflix will likely release the talk show episodes in a different way than it has debuted its other original series, where it is released all the episodes at once to encourage “binge viewing.” THR / The Live Feed “If I was going to continue working in this industry, I knew I had to do something outside the box to keep myself interested. I wanted to sit with the cool kids at lunch so I approached Netflix to make sure they were as cool as I thought they were, and when I confirmed my suspicions, like with any other future lover, I made my move,” said Handler in a statement. The Washington Post / Style Blog Before this, Handler made no secret that she despised the E! network — and her manager told the media she was actively looking for another gig. When E! announced the series finale of her talk show this summer, she offered the most lukewarm departure statement ever: “I will always look back at my time on E! as most people look back at their time in college. I’m glad I went.” HuffPost In addition to the talk show, Handler will also be collaborating with Netflix on five comedy specials into next year, including stand-up and docu-comedy specials.

Morning Media Newsfeed: Amazon Unveils Fire Phone | Carney’s Final Briefing

Amazon Launches Smartphone (GalleyCat)
Amazon has gotten into the smartphone business with the launch of the Fire, Amazon’s first smartphone. NYT Though the device is called the Fire phone, Amazon’s new gadget is less a phone than a pocketable cash register hooked directly into the retailer’s intelligent warehouses. And it’s not cheap. The Fire phone sells for $199 with a two-year AT&T contract. Although it also comes with a free one-year subscription to Amazon’s Prime membership, the Fire phone is essentially the same price as high-end phones made by Apple and Samsung. For Amazon, a company whose previous devices have had innovative pricing plans that often involved selling devices at cost, the Fire phone’s uninspired price tag is a surprising disappointment. The Washington Post / The Switch The phone lets you scan products in stores, so that you can buy things directly from Amazon, using a new service called “Firefly.” Users can even use the phone to “listen” to songs or videos, and link users to places to buy them. It can also recognize art, and scan text such as phone numbers and then immediately place a call. The Verge There’s one big difference here: the Fire phone’s interface changes based on how you’re looking at it and how you orient the device. Amazon calls the feature “Dynamic Perspective,” which basically means that some apps on the phone will have a three-dimensional depth to them, and tilting the phone will let you peer around edges, just as you can with real objects. Mashable The history of 3D-type screens in mobile suggests consumers aren’t interested in the feature. The two most notable devices, the HTC Evo 3D and the LG Optimus 3D, both flopped. The only real 3D success in mobile so far has been the Nintendo 3DS, which is explicitly a game console.

Angie Martinez Resigns from Hot 97

Angie Martinez, one of the most influential voices in hip-hop radio, has resigned from Hot 97. In an Instagram post, Martinez thanked Hot 97′s parent company Emmis Communications and explained that she wanted to explore new opportunities.

“This was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever had to make but ultimately it is time to move on, to grow and to be challenged in new ways,” wrote Martinez, also known as “The Voice of New York.” “Saying goodbye is always emotional and bitter sweet but I am extremely excited about the future.”

Martinez had been with Hot 97 for 25 years. During her time there she interviewed almost every major player in hip-hop that you can think of, from Kanye West to Tupac Shakur.

HOT 97′s Ebro Chooses Creative Over Corporate

EbroelViejoOnce upon a time, it would have been hard to imagine someone picking reality TV over the job of program director in the nation’s number one radio market. But just as surely as Kardashian is spelled with a “K”, those days are now upon us.

Following a semi-ultimatum from the management of hip-hop NYC power house HOT 97, on-air personality Ebro (a.k.a. Ebro Darden) revealed this week that he has decided to focus on the “talent” aspects of his career rather than those involving Excel spreadsheets. He will remain on the air, but his work on the upcoming VH1 reality TV series This is Hot 97 and future, resulting commitments tipped the scales. From a report by XXL magazine:

Stating that he was ultimately told to choose between his two positions, the long-time employee went with the entertainer route.

Hot 97′s Mister Cee Comes Clean in GQ Interview

MisterCEEGQPhotoFascinating piece from GQ staff writer Zach Baron in the February issue. It starts with a guided drive-through tour of the Brooklyn neighborhood that bore Calvin Lebrun, a.k.a Mister Cee, and progresses to Lebrun candidly explaining the motivations and minutiae of a sordid sex scandal.

The Daily News , a newspaper that was instrumental in bringing said scandal to the fore, got the embargoed advance look; full GQ article is here. The interview is a great primer for those who know little about Lebrun, Hot 97 and-or the lead-up to his messy, protracted downfall:

On the Kane tours, he says, he was “f*cking everything in sight.” The whole time he had a steady girlfriend, too. Once, he says, coming off tour, he gave her gonorrhea. “It was the most horrible thing I ever did to a woman in my life,” Cee says. She called him last year, after Cee had a run-in with the guy she was dating, just to tell him off again. “I mean, cursed me out, just called me all types of fagg*ts and homos.”

Mister Cee Resigns from Hot 97 Amid Drag Queen Solicitation Accusations

This is now way for a hip-hop legend to go out. Mister Cee, who has been with Hot 97 since 1993, has resigned from the station amid accusations by a drag queen that Cee requested sexual services. On the air, Cee said he was stepping down because “I never want to be in a situation where I get pushed out anywhere.”

Early this morning, the Internet erupted when a drag queen by the name of Bimbo Whinehouse (sigh) posted a recording of what he claimed was Cee soliciting him. This isn’t the first time Cee has had his name connected to solicitation; he has been arrested twice in the past for incidents involving prostitutes.

Hot 97 issued the following statement:

WLTW Expands Overall Ratings Lead for February

Not to be redundant, but it’s another winning month for WLTW/Lite-FM.

The Clear Channel number one mainstay kept residence in its familiar spot with a 7.6 in the overall Arbitron ratings. That’s a .4 boost from January.

By contrast, WCBS-FM slipped to a 6.2 in the current PPM.

WBLS also dropped by .2 to 5.5, while WHTZ/Z100 lost .3 to 5.1.

WINS was next with 4.7, a .2 gain. Sister station WCBS 880 also saw a .2 upgrade to 3.8.

The big news is tracking NASH-FM/WNSH, the city’s first Country station in more than 15 years. NASH in its first full ratings survey notched a 1.6. Just below NASH was ESPN’s WEPN-FM at 1.3, a drop from 1.6. More dramatically, ESPN has lost a point since November.

WFAN-FM kept its distance from its rival. But the ‘FAN, which simulcasts on 660 AM and 101.9 FM, had an uncharacteristic drop of 1.2 to 2.5 for February.

There’s more from the monthly ratings after the jump.
